Where's The Float?

Working on fuel problems and thought while I was ordering parts, I'd go ahead and get carb kits for my engine; haven't removed them as yet. Went to MMarine and got the pn (1395-823635_4) for the carb kit and the picture of the kits shows no float but includes needle valve. Went back to the chart where I found the engine hp/type list, and carb kits listed and for my engine, and there is a - rather than a pn for a float in the Floats column. Confused. Don't these engines have floats in their carbs?

Re: Where's The Float?

Carb kits for cars don't include a float either as they rarely need replacement. That said, marine floats are the same situation. Carb kits don't include them. The fact that a dash is indicated for the float indicates that supplier doesn't carry them. It doesn't mean they aren't available. You probably need to go to Merc (if that's what you are working on) to get one.

Ok my man, since you are on my wavelength: As you may remember I have the same engine as yours basically, just the bigger brother. I am putting in a new fuel pump kit and right now the fuel line inlet to the pump is still in the engine, pump removed. The oil supply line is about 1" forward of the fuel pump connection (as you know). My self oiler has been working perfectly so I want to continue to use it.

Question is, with my new few lines (empty) and new Merc OEM squeeze bulb, as soon as I hook everything back up and start squeezing the bulb, I am going to be pumping raw fuel to the pump inlet. Worrying about lube for the cylinders at startup.

The pump is gear driven off the engine. Engine off, no oiler. When I get ready to run, I will squeeze the bulb and it will force fuel through the pump and up to the carbs till all bowls are full and the needle valves close and cause the bulb to get firm.

So now, I have the carbs full of raw fuel........errrrrrrr not good? What do I do, prime the fuel line with pure oil before I reconnect to the fuel pump inlet, and before I start pumping fuel from the tank to the carbs?

Which raises another question. When the engine has been sitting and you get ready to run it, the fuel line gets pumped up with the bulb. The engine isn't running so the oil pump isn't pumping oil........so am I looking at every startup is a dry start; no oil in the fuel?

So, just in the event I get cold feet and bypass the oiler and just put a 50:1 mix in the tank for good to prevent dry starts (unless you clue me in that they aren't dry starts), where/how do I find the info to defeat the pump without tearing up a lot of stuff. Are there threads on here somewhere to consult?

Thanks again,

Mark

Your engine is a model:

1075412ZN MERCURY 2002 75

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/3374.cfm

See item 21 under Carburetor

Gerry

Thanks Gerry. Got the parts list and saw the float, laughing, knowing that a conventional carburetor has to have a float. Grin.

I guess you nailed it. They were designed properly, don't require periodic replacing as is the case in other engines with less design fore thought. I have another thread going on this forum about crud in my inlet fuel hose. I addressed it to Faztbullet and another guy xxx,xxx 05, don't remember his handle.

Thanks,

Mark
