I hope this is the right forum, I have 50hp motor and would like to know what type and size of boat to install in on. I would like for it to plane out and run around 30mph so i could run around the lake and not get run down all the time. please help.

Re: which boat

Most light weight 15-16' boats with planing hulls will fit the bill for you, Dante.

My favorite in that range is the 15' Boston Whaler (classic 15', not the newer 150). It came in several configurations. I have the Striper 15, DWJ has a Sport 15 that he is customizing; I think to a center console.

That boat with a 50 on it should top out at about 35 with one person and a light load, 30-33 with two aboard and more of a load. Mine with 2 adults, 12 gallons of gas and fishing gear for a day on a big lake tops at 32 and cruises well at 28-30.

For less bux most of the 15-16' aluminum semi-vees do well with a 50.

Good luck. :)

agree with JB, the aluminum, 14 - 15 will make a nice little runabout. stay with a light boat, and away from trihull.

Re: which boat

That would be fine depending on the weight of the hull? Do you have the weight?

Check the transom length, as that could possibly limit you. I have a 1976 merc 50HP on a 16' FG runabout. It will plane out and run 30 - 32 with a 12 pitch prop and light load. Max load and it just bogs.
