I have a 85 Hp Force. Im relatively new to the site. Im learning though, much thanks to this website for that. My current project is rebuilding carbs and installing a new bilge pump. I am unsure on what carb kit to get for my force motor though. Its a 88 Bayliner Capri Cuddy w/ the 85hp Force motor.
I guess im just gunna have to find the owners manual and get the part # I need. The boats in great shape aside from my 1 leaky carb. It sucks that its the middle carb outta the 3. Im pretty sure its just the needle/float from what it sounds like. If cleaning and repairing the carbs isn't too hard i might just re-do all of them. Im jus worried about messing up the timing of low speed/high speed/ or idle. What should i look out for? I have been reading the sticky's but im unsure.
I watched the videos on youtubes of the marine doctor and that was alotta help but those carbs on those engines are single. I have 3, which makes me a little more nervous. Is it easy just to go for the middle one or should i take em all out and just re-do them all?

My engine looks identical to this one
How would you go about doing this?

I was also wondering if theres anything I can do to squeeze some more power out of this motor? I mean 40mph on the water is plenty fast but Ima guy and im always looking to go faster. I saw this thing that looks like a fin that goes above the propeller. I wanted to know what it does for a boats performance or handling? Does it just keep the boat more stable or could you see gains with it?

once its fixed im gunna be like this guy

The Doel-Fin, Hydro-foil, or "Whale-Tail will usually reduce top speed. It may improve hole-shot performance and may not. These aftermarket foils are relatively cheap and you get what you pay for. Most of the time they are either useless or detrimental to the boat's performance Sometimes they help--but will never increase top speed.

The Force engines are very old school design. As such, they respond well to port work. You can gain up to 30 horsepower and between 3-5 MPH more top speed. However, porting the engine requires disassembly. I have no good photos of porting, however, if you go to The Chrysler Crew, go to the questions forum, and go to photo albums, You can find a couple in "Frank's Boats."

Fugeddaboud carb changes--they will yeild no increas in horsepower.

However, it is best to remove all three carbs an clen them well. That is not as difficult a job as it looks. I change carbs more often than I change underwear--OOOH! Too much sharing! LOL

Get a manual and reset the synchronizing of timing and carbs. Above all Never, Never, Never run the carbs too lean; this is a sure fire way to melt pistons. MINIMUM setting should be 3/4 turns out from lightly seated on the low speed needles, preferably 7/8 out, no matter how poor the idle is.
