Which Carb Kit?

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me figure out which carb kit I need. I just got a boat with a 1995 Johnson 88 SPL (oil injected) on it. It doesn't idle well at all so I'd like to get into the carbs (it sat for 3 years before I bought it). I don't have a manual yet (on order) so I'm having a hard time finding which kit I need from the parts finder. Can anyone help? Do I need two kits (one for each carb)? Or does the kit cover both?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: Which Carb Kit?

i am not aware that the 88 spl had oil injection, not having the OMS pump is one of the features of the 88. premixed fuel. the BRP site only shows 88's with premixed fuel pumps. either way this is the carb kit, you need 2 of them. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...=88&gd_search_11578=1995&**********=125112107

your fuel pump should look like this one. http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_735...z.36857--**********.125112107--view_id.174140

i have had several 90 hp and 88 spl's.

Re: Which Carb Kit?

Thanks for the info! This forum is amazing. I've been lurking here for only a few days and I've learned so much already.

Yeah, the research I've done all sez the 88s were not oil injected. I guess that'swhat the "Special" (SPL) meant. This one has got some sort of system though. I don't know much about how to VRO system works but this one appears to inject oil into the fuel line about 24 inches upstream of the priming bulb. Is this how the VRO works too? Or is that injected directly into the engine somewhere?

Since my last post I discovered that my oil injection system in an "Autoblend" by Mercury. It does indeed inject oil into the fuel line upstream of the engine.

Hell NO. get rid of it. those things have destroyed many motors. get a regular 6 gallon plastic tank with johnson fittings, and pre mix your fuel 50:1, TC-w3 outboard motor oil, walmart carry's the tank, fitting , hose, and oil.

Re: Which Carb Kit?

I think this is a little different than the OMC autoblend, which seemed to be an actual external fuel tank with an oil reservoir. This unit is apparently Mercury's first attempt at oil injection and sounds just as sketchy. Everything I've read today sez to unhook it and throw it as far as you can. Here's a pic of the unit. The larger of the two lines is from the internal fuel tank on the boat. The smaller line goes to the engine. Unhooking this thing should be as simple as mating the two lines together and premixing in the main fuel tank.

horrible invention, omc had one also, they both ruined many motors.
