Re: which conn.rod will work?

Those numbers are casting numbers and normally they do not change. I'd suggest that you examine both rods extremely close, looking for the smallest variation, and if you find one..... don't use it.

The 1973 rod part number is 385510, unavailable since 1992.

The 1974 rod part number is 385911 original - superseded up thru 387831 - 393754 - to 392591 latest number of which I have four left in stock. The casting number on this rod 1974 rod is 321712.

Re: which conn.rod will work?

The 1973 V4's were a one-of-a-kind deal as far as the powerhead goes. The block, crank, rods and pistons will only fit those components from 73. Not 72 & earlier, not 74 & later.

A complete powerhead assembly from 74 to 76 and some 77's are a direct swap. Powerheads from a 1977 140 & all 1978 & newer V4 crossflows can be adapted to your 73 mid section.

If all you need is a rod, you'll have to use a 1973 rod if you have a 73 block, crank and piston.

No. I would not use that rod. Those look like water marks, typically caused by moisture condensing on the bearings. If the bearings have no film of oil on them, they rust. There they contact the rod also rusts. Comes from improper winterization or storage...
