scenario, bought another boat and trailer, it has no brakes. needing brakes is not the issue, i want them. i am an old school surge guy but want to consider todays electrics and am asking which or whose complete kits i should maybe lean to. both my vehicles are wired for electric now. thanks rick

a little additional info, /97 lund tyee, 175hp plus 9.8 kicker. completely loaded with down riggers and minn kota 80, 3 batteries with built in charge system. i mention this info to get a grip on the weight of the package with trailer. there's a truck stop 3-4mi from me so i will get exact weight some sunny day. just pondering the issue now.

Installed dexter never adjust and after the first adjustment during setup, never touched them again. Very well made

Is there a compelling reason to swap working surge brakes to electrics? I had Kodiak hydraulic disc surge brakes on my last boat and thought they worked great. New boat has surge disc brakes from the factory & works great. No electric stuff to worry about & no need to worry about which vehicle tows it (not that it has ever been a concern). Our camper has electric brakes & I find the constant tweaking of the controller to be somewhat annoying. Sometimes they bite too hard & other times not enough. So far I prefer the surge style.

OP doesn't have brakes on his trailer and is thinking of installing electric

I agree. Dexter drums and Dexter brake assemblies. I have them on my Boat trailer and they work great.

well i guess i should be checking into dexter braking assemblies. humph

i am still on the fence about surge or electric but just thinking about it. it will be getting brakes or shop for a used one with brakes and pedal this one. i would be comfortable pulling it with the truck but with the suv it should have brakes. i tinker with old cars for the winter and its nice to have something different, pardon the pun here, to play with to brake the monotony. lol its a long winter here, ont canada so i have time to ponder. the dang thing has springs on it and i prefer torsoin bar. the price was right on the package so i didn't really get into the trailer to far when i was checking the deal out. i just want to go fishing as the off shore stuff is getting to be less fun with age. funny how that works ain't it.
keep you posted

while were at it, disc or drum? any thoughts here. pro or against don't matter, it's all info i probably didn't know yesterday.

i checked out the dexter site and impressive. with iso rating also, and it appears to be made in america. i always try to keep the money on this side of the world.

I've done a little researching but have yet to find a "complete" electric over hydraulic DISK kit. You can find all the parts and pieces but not a complete kit. Since I put in to saltwater disc is the way to go because of the lack of moving parts at the hub to corrode/adjust.

I'm a fan of disc. Adjusting drums is a nuisance & I believe discs are more efficient at stopping.

In my opinion, disc are better then drum do to next to no fade due to extreme heat. That said; disc require a bypass valve or blocking valve to back the trailer. Drums offer resistance but can be over come by the tow vehicle.

Electric brakes never cause any rolling resistance unless you hit the brakes.

Never adjust drums NEVER need adjusted.

I doubt you will find a complete kit. I have a Titan elec/hydraulic with Kodiac brakes bought separately. Just look around and find the cheapest price on both items. I love my set up. I hate drum brakes.
