Hi,when I went to adjust my trim on my stern drive,I had problems bringing it up or down.I checked the fliud level and saw that it was was low so I toped it up.My boat by the way is a 1976 Thundercraft "Flamingo with a 165 HP 250 cu. in.Chevy straight 6 with an Alpha 1 stern drive. The point that I am getting at is that the manual says use SAE 20 oil but my mechanic had put in Transmission fliud and it seemed to work fine.Would this be the newer or better fliud for my trim pump. Thanks in advance for all your answers.

Merc manuals state one or the other, but ATF is a bit thinner. If the oils are mixed then you might want to purge out all that and start with fresh single type, use one or the other but not mixed.
