i noticed the # of posts and threads , seem to be johnson! followed by merc then yami . this must be some type of indicator since stats show the most sales of these motors in a different order. what else could cause these diff in #?. more yami mechanics or more problems with johnson rudes ? or just a purchase shift in timing for sales. just something to ponder!

OMC made a good motor that lasted forever and they sold a bunch so there's more of them still around. A lot of the members here know a lot about them so they tend to post quite a bit in that section.
I suspect the numbers will change in about 50 years when these old JohnnyRude's finally give up the ghost.

Omc made Johnson Evinrude from about 1919 till 2001 so that si ALOT of engine out there to ask questions about, Yamaha has only been doing outboards since the mid 80s, Merc is almost as old so it is th number of engines out there, nothing to do with reliability.

Yep, it's reasonable that Johnson and Evinrudes have the most play on this site because of their shear numbers over that last 60 years. They used to be #1 in sales for a very long time.

Look closely at the questions and the year of the motor of the poster. You will see that there are a lot of old J-E outboards - over 25 years old - being mentioned. Now go to the other sites and chart the years. It's a no brainer.

The 3hp is about 33-35 lbs basic design dates back to 52. the 64 on up are a little cleaner with a 50:1 fuel mix.
Same basic power head up to at least 89. 5.28 cu.in.Newer ones are somewhat cleaner.
By the way Mercury didn't get started till about 1940 so Evinrude had a 21 year head start
in total production.
