I took my 1993 alpha 1 gen 2 drive off today to grease the u joints. in my gasket mounting kit there are 2 housing gaskets. one has the extra oil passage hole and one doesnt. whoever installed the drive last used the gasket with no extra hole. the boat ran fine for many seasons like this. it looks to me like i should be using the gasket with the extra hole as there is a passage in the housings for this. can any body tell me which gasket i should use and what exactly does this oil passage do? thks

If your housing has the hole in it that is cut into the gasket then it is the gasket to use.

TMD

Re: which gasket?

That hole is when your engine is equiped with a gear lube monitor. There is a plastic spike in the bell housing that presses in a spring loaded ball in the drive that lets oil flow to your drive from a plastic bottle mounted in your engine conpartment or on your engine. You can use the gasket with the hole on drives with or with this feature. The gasket without the hole would be hard to install if you have a monitor.
