which hole

I have 4 different holes that I can adjust the tilt to on my outboard. I noticed today that when it is running on the last hole, the farthest on away from the transom, the prop is the only thing in the water. Therefore, there is no water running through the motor. which setting is the best? is there a fin or something i can get to keep the motor underwater? I don't want to be towing tubers and have it not getting cooled. maybe the boat is too small for the motor. 16 foot fiberglass cigarette boat replica with a 40 hp? ideas? i want to go to a bigger engine too. Can I make the transom smaller? If so, how?

lots of questions and I thank all those in advance that reply!

Re: which hole

I would imagine with it set there your bow comes up a lot when you first take off. Experiment with it in different holes until you get your best overall performance. I would guess it will be the 2nd or 3rd hole out.

Agreed. All the outboards I've owned that had this style setting have always used either the 2nd or 3rd hole, usually the 2nd from the transom. That last one away from the transom is more like shallow drive if you need to run in very shallow water, it is not meant to be used for more than an idle speed IMO.

I've always heard that you use the positioning hole that will put the cavitation plate on the motor level (or closest to level) with the bottom of the boat closest to the transom. Works well on my little aluminum.:D

90 degrees w/ the transom (depending on the transom angle), but level w/ the bottom of the boat aft.

Re: which hole

set it to where you get the best performance. close to the transom, pushes bow down, the further back raises the bow. you also have to have the average load in the boat, when adjusting this. there is no set rule.
