Looking to repower my boat. 19 foot smoker with 10in jack plate. lots of saltwater. I have been only 2-stroke merc for years. Read some threads and seems like the suzuki might be a lesser of an engine. 2001 yamaha rebuilt and 1 year warranty buy rebuilder 5000.00 OR.... New 2008 suzuki 115 or 140 with six year warranty for 11,000.00 and payments. whats the better buy.

I'd usually go with a newer motor, though 11K seems high. If you live in the NE part of the country, I'd consider driving to ED's Marine Superstore.

Both are excellent engines, boatman. If they were both new at close prices or both rebuilt at similar prices It would be a question of who has the best local support and warranty.

But it isn't. It is an excellent rebuilt for less than half the price of the excellent new one.

I would buy the Yammy.

IMO, I've had both brands in motorcycles, and Yamaha is the better made, engineered, & designed, Suzuki's were usually cheap, & cheaply made, lighter weight due to this, that's why they are known for speed, but not so much a comfortable ride, handling, or durability. I would guess it carries through their vehicles, & outboards, I'd get The Yammy also! Just my 2cts.

Why do you think 2 strokes always have to be rebuilt?? And why do 4 strokes last and have less problems?? for 6k diffance I would get something that is worry free.

I have had many 2 strokes and only one 4 stroke.

is that telling you something.

Two strokes do NOT always have to be rebuilt and 4 strokes will not last forever. Where the heck did you get such a strange idea?

Both, with proper care, will last longer than one user will use them.

But you bring up a good point. Boatman didn't tell us whether these engines are 2 stroke or 4 stroke. I don't think it would change my suggestion, (I assumed both are 4 stroke) but I do think it would make a lot of difference to a lot of people.

What say, boatman? Tell us more about both engines.

Sorry about the mixup...Both engines are 4-strokes. The reason for the change is fuel economy. Can't fit a bigger tank on the boat. Need to increase range. ALSO...many of the high lakes in my area that I fish from time to time do not alow 2-stroke motors anylonger.

Yea you dont have to always rebuild a 2-stroke!! I have a 1986 Yamaha 115hp and it has about 2,600 hours and runs great!!. I take good care of it and so did the previous owner. I hope it lasts another 1,000 hours at least. If something bad were to happen to it, like low compression or something like that, i think i would rebuild it and keep it. It starts cold with just a bump of the flywheel. I choke it and just bump the key and it is ideling at 700-800 rpm perfectally. I dont have to use the high speed idle lever like i see a lot of people doing in order to get motors to start when they are cold. I love that motor and ive been verry happy with it. If for some reason i had to buy another motor i would buy a yamaha. I could not afford a new one but i would still buy yamaha dosent matter the year or hours as long as it has been maintained properly. Thats just my opinion about the ammount of hours like i said if the proper maintnence has been preformed than year and hours dont matter. This has been my experiance with yamaha's, mine and my dad's has been great to him also. He has a 115 also and he never services it and it it has never done him wrong. Just my 2 cents!!

In my opinion, the Yamaha is the superior motor. When it comes to parts availability for new and very old motors, Yamaha is right at the top. Many parts for older Susuki engines are discontinued while virtually every part for older Yamaha motors are still available. The customer support for Yamaha is also much better. Yamaha has been a well respected manufacturer of many types of motors for a long time. This is an easy decision for me.

Sorry for the miss understanding of 2 and 4 strokes.

I am with Bruce,

I have had my F200 rebuilt and has run great since. So 4 strokes can also be rebuilt too. ;) Parts where really easy to get a hold of. I went to http://www. yamahaoutboardparts.com

boatman,

If not already said, buy from a dealer you like and trust.

I owned a new Suzuki that had a lot of problems but that is not indicative of the brand. Unfortuneately, the situation was aggrevated because I had to move away from a good Suzy dealer. I've also had a bad experience with a Honda dealer. Again, not necessarily indicative of the brand.

Get the picture? The dealer can make, or break, your experience.

I will say that the Yammy dealer network appears to be stronger. If your not moving, that's really not an issue.

Re: which is better suzuki or yamaha

I would have to wonder why was a 2001 Yamaha 4-Stroke needed to be rebuilt. I have a 2002, seasonal tuna trips, alot of Catalina trips, local you name it and I only have 400hrs. These things are scheduled to last around +/- 4,000 hours depending on care, but even at 3,000 hours, I don't think I will ever hit (maybe if I retire and fish every day). Was this used comercially, or possibly abused? (I have overheated mine twice, not bad enough to register, thought I had low compression, but just my imiganation still nothing wrong) If someone was able to run it for 3,000-4,000 hours, then I would suspect that you will have problems in other areas if they are not rebulit also. If abused, I would expect the same.

You may also want to ask their definition of a rebuild...ie just torn apart and looked at, just replaced rings, honed cylinders and changed all parts etc, I believe there is diff levels of a rebuild.

Get a 135 opti v6. It has way way more tq, is faster, burns cleaner, gets better fuel milage, plus you can upgrade as deep as your wallet is.

my second choice would be an ETEC you can get both for under 10k used... maybe less

5000 bucks sounds good(better than 50% diff.). I'd consider a one year warranty by the shop to be a good sign that they put out a quality product. Of course, in a year I would probably put more hours on a motor than most boat owners would in ten. I would end up getting the most out of the one year warranty that I could.
