Which Mercury kicker would you choose?

First post! I've been lurking these forums for awhile and they're a great source of information! Glad to finally join.

Anyway, I've decided to add a kicker to my Tracker Pro-Guide V16. I'm adding it primarily to access local lakes that have a 9.9 HP restriction. I want to be able to fish out of my big boat, rather than take my little dink 14' aluminum.

So, since my budget isn't unlimited and neither is my wife's patience, I've been looking at used motors. I've narrowed it down to two local options.

Option 1: 2002 Mercury 8 horse 2-stroke. Apparently low hours and mint. Manual start. It's a private seller asking $1000. Whether the price is negotiable, I'm unsure. I'm going to check it out and will see if I can move the price.

Option 2: 2005 Mercury 8 horse 4-stroke. Low hours, electric start. From a dealer and they want $1400.

I'm leaning toward the 4-stroke for the usual 4-stroke reasons. Plus, with my primary motor being oil injected, I can just plug the 4-stroke to my main tank and skip an auxiliary tank, plus premixing! I'm thinking the 2005 is a no-brainer, but if I can get the 2-stroke for $700-800, is that 4-stroke worth twice the price? Neither motor is going to see tons of use and I'm sure both would suit my needs.

Any opinions would be appreciated!

I'd get the 4-stroke for the reasons you mention. Usually quieter too.

Well I went with the newer 2005 4-stroke. To say the motor is like new would be an understatement. Now to put it to use!
