Two motors both in verified running condition. Which would you pay more for?

Here are the two in question.

1978 150 Hp running condition verified running.

1981 115 hp Documented proof of Carb rebuild, new stator, new water pump, new timer base, two new power packs, new plugs, new gear oil, verified compression numbers.

Here is my thought process

Yes a 6 vs 4

Was looking at trading my 115 for a 150. For the 18 SS, I am not oppossed to my 115 I have completely tuned it out and its awesome running now.

But I am not interested in paying boot, especially since all of the maintenance records are up to date on mine.

If the motors were the same year then I would look at it. I like the fact that mine has the newer style power packs, non adjustable carbs, and a few other things. I like the fact that his is a 150 he has pics of it on the water. I hate the fact that it has been rattle canned black, I am going to have to paint it immediately. Also I am going to have to change the water pump immediately as well.

Or are they of straight out equal value.

I would say the 150 just because of the HP.

Probably the 115, it's newer and has more verified work done to it... or sounds like it anyway.

That black one has been poorly painted, that absolutely kills the resale value in my book.

but sig can fix paint as we've seen.

dunno, I'm partial to the old OMC 4's - we had a Rude 115 that was temperamental but solid - he started that one out on the 18' Starcraft you have seen pics I posted of that was a heavy boat. All the added wood plus at one point they hit a bar and jacked the bottom he tells me the repair added a couple hundred pounds still ran fine. Not sure what your 18 is.

Then dad went to a Johnny 140 and was great on an 18' Sea Ray 19 SRV - push about 40 mph lightly loaded. A 150 on your 18' tin would be pretty stout. Plus fuel - is there much of a diff in the two?

Re: Which motor is more valuable.

The V6 will give a much better hole shot, but 35 horsepower more will only yield about 7 MPH more top end.

SO: You know what you have with your 115, and would be buying an unknown 150. Is the hole shot and top end important enough to you to buy the bigger engine?

I can fix bad paint but the prep work to get that right is a SERIOUS PIA.

I know the OMC V4's are great long lasting motors. I don't know much about the 6's fuel consumption isn't so much the issue.

My thought process is if you were so lazy as to only rattle can it without any prep work how has the maintenane been done? When was the last time the water pump was changed? How about the gear oil, and Plugs?

I know this may not mean much to some and it really doesn't me either. He wants to derig the motor in the front yard of his trailer and manually lift the motor by hand. I want to bring it to my shop where I have all proper air tools, and can properly derig the motor either with the exccavator or hoist (my thought is to prevent damage to either motor) I already know that he lifted it and balanced it on the skeg once. Not that it would hurt the motor but it only takes one slip).

Mine is already off and on a stand.

I don't think I am going to do the deal. I want a 150 and I am willing to pay the difference but I don't think I am going to pay the difference for this motor.

I want the extra hole shot because I pull skiers and tubers.

Honestly what I really want is a 140 V4 or a Suzuki Dt140

Re: Which motor is more valuable.

Condition is the primary factor on motors of this vintage. Compression and condition of the motor with regard to corrosion. Offer to help put a new water pump in the 150 and if everything comes apart easily, the compression tests well, and the tilt/trim is in good shape it is probably a good motor regardless of maintenance records or a lack thereof.

Re: Which motor is more valuable.

Those Jonny-rudes go faster when you paint them black!

Since you're going to put a 150 on the back of the resto I strongly suggest you go down to the boat store and get you a nice brand spanking new one, a little bit down and a little bit every month for a few years and you'll be happy and the boat store will be happy... everybody will be happy.:D

Seriously, you don't know what you're getting when you buy an older used motor like that, especially the bigger ones. They've probably had the dog snot run out of them and they're on their last leg... then they'll come apart on you just as you start having fun with it.

I say stick with the 115 even if you have to paint it or have someone else paint it or buy a new motor.

You'll look like a millionaire with a new 150 on the back of that SC!;)
