Which type of oil do I use in my '65 Evinrude 9.5? Multi Vis, or Hypoid?

Thanks, working on this motor has been much easier with the info I have gotten here.

Any 80-90wt outboard gear oil will be fine. The electric shift models needed 'type C' but yours is mechanical, so nothing special needed.

I use standard 80-90w from walmart in the blue jugs. By the way, a pump is awesome for when you are trying to fill a LU up. I believe that pump is the best $4 that I have spent so far. The tubes are very aggravating to me.

For your LU, as long as it has the API Service GL-5 rating, you are good to go. I usually buy mine by the quart, but I have a couple motors that I am in the process of rebuilding. It is nice to have a couple extra oil changes handy when working on the Lower Units.

Re: Which Oil for lower Unit?

Good, thank you. I wasn't able to find new washers for the fill/vent plugs, so I'll be changing it out again soon. Looks like the previous owner used thread sealant, must of worked, and the oil in it was very dirty but had no water. They sure used a lot of flat heat fasteners. The ones on the impeller cover were slightly abused, and if not for my impact drive, they may not of come off. Can those be changed out to an Allen, or???

Thanks for the help!

I agree. I'm in the process of checking out each system, to see if the engine is worth the effort. Now that I know its pumping water, and I have fresh lube in the lower unit, and it runs in a barrel, I'll take it out, run some Seafoam thru it as per Leeroys Ramblings. The test run should show up any problems with the carb and ignition, and I'll take it from there.
