Which oil is best?

I have been using Johnson/Evinrude 2-cycle oil for my boat. Am I just wasting my money on this? Wal-mart's stuff is 6 bucks, and I pay 17 for the "supposedly" good stuff.

Wal Mart SuperTech TC-W3 oil is also good stuff, FF. That is what I have used in my 2 stroke outboards.

Expect a heated debate here. Lot's of people have strong opinions on small differences and sometimes present opinions as fact.

This question affects all outboards, so I will move it to the General Outboard Forum.

Good luck. :)

JB is right. I used the same thing for MANY years with no problems and never decarbed until recently. I do now use a different oil, but I still feel that the Wallyworld oil is fine for most apps... Let this one go, because we all know where it's headed...

These guys are right on...if it meets the specs the motor maker intended it should be just fine... just a thought :)

Some people swear that synthetics are better. (Lube Dude, where are you?) I have used both the Wally World juice and the Pennzoil blend oil from the same store, but I can not say that I have noticed any difference, other than paying more for the latter.

Hello all.

First off, read the FAQ.
OIL FAQ
It will not tell you which oil to use, that is your decision to make.

I allways suggest using a full synthetic. I use them and do so because I like the less smoking, slightly better all round performance, and less deposit issue, but you will be fine using a TC-W3 certified oil regardless of what is on the label. (Brand wise), will work just fine.

Hey Lube Dude,,,I have heard that the synthetics do not have the corrosion resistance properties that the regular oils have,,any input on this.I run Zoil(Amsoil) in my boat, sleds and golf cart just to be on the safe side.I figure it this way,for all the more it costs me in a year,,,it is worth it!!!!!!!!!

Mrtool2U:

Ok, is this a trap, are you trying to start a problem? (Kidding), but sure sounds like a trol in a way but you are probably serious so I will say what I believe to be true. How can I actually say with certainty?

I believe that Amsoil has done the best job that it posibly can, as well as any other synthetic on the market to provide the best storage protection available, with that said, (Can I prove it)? No, but I have never had a problem with corrosion here in oregon, but I cant say with any certainty about climates like Florida for example. If I lived in a humid climate like that, I would still fog in the winter time even though I turn my engine over every month at least and pump the bulb up at least once a month. I would do all that I could rguardless of what oil I used.
