Re: Which OMC drive do I have
I just purchased a 95 Four Winns 190 Horizon open bow and is has an OMC drive, not by my choice, but the boat is extremely clean so I bought it any way. It has a fuel injected 5.0 in it. Is this one of the drives that was built with Volvo parts or not and how can I tell. I have read that the later OMC cobras were simular to the Volvo SX drive. It does not say SX on the side of it only OMC Cobra. I am tring to find out if this is a good drive or not. Thanks in advace for any help.
Howdy,
You'll need to provide a little more info to identify it. The model number is the most important. Year model of the boat doesn't mean much since all boat manufacturers have routinely used "last year" models of engines and drives for many years.......so you might just have a 94 model.
I don't want to scare you but if you have an EFI, electronic ignition OMC engine, you may have the worst year ever made (aside from the fact that OMC is out of business) There may be parts you simply cannot buy for that EFI or ignition system.
For example, your ECM (OMC 3854889) would have a list price of $1230 if it was still available.
However, If you "kill' the engine you're not really "dead" in the water because you can probably just replace the engine with a similar (5.0L or 5.7L+ different flywheel housing) engine that has a distributor and carburetor on it.
I did some checking on some of the other drive parts like the housing etc and it appears that they may also be NLA. (it was also superseded by a newer number that also appears NLA)
That of course doesn't mean that you can't replace what you have with an SX. You might be able to do that.
There's a few years of OMC drives that are not very supportable right before they switched to the JOINT (VP SX) drive........I thought it was around 95 or 96.
You can check your options by noting your model number and comparing it to models and parts at
http://epc.brp.com/
You can also find used drives "all over the place"...........There's also people that rebuild those drives as long as the NLA hard parts aren't broken.
Sorry about that.....
