Which one of these OB would be more powerfull ?

I presently own a 1981 Johnson 9.9 hp ... and I am looking at 1989 Evinrude 8 hp as an additional toy. I have read that starting at a certain year the HP rating was different ... something to do with crank or prop power rating.

Are both these OB rated the same way ? If not would the 1989 8hp OB be close in power to the 1981 9.9hp ?

I stand to be corrected but I think that the HP rating at the prop started in 1985. So that would make the 8hp prop rated and the 9.9 at the crankshaft.

Then would the 1.9 hp difference between those two OB,s remain ? Or would they be closer in HP ?

Your 8 will give 8 at the prop. Your 9.9 will give around 10% less at the prop. Therefore a little under 9 at the prop.

That would only leave a one Hp difference ... I would then presume the 8 hp to be almost as performant as the 9.9 ... and be 8 years younger ... LOL

My 9.9 has 216 cc ... anybody would know how many cc the 1989 Evinrude 8 hp would have ?

You would find very little if any difference in performance in my opinion.

The 9.9 will run circles around the 8. The 9.9 of 1984 is the exact same as the 9.9 of 1985. The "re-rating" didn't really affect the smaller motors as the difference was small enough to fall within the fudge-factor built into the rating system. Although the 8hp isn't a bad motor, the 9.9 is a better motor...
