hello everyone i am in a pickle here. I have a couple motors to choose from and from what i get, they all seem to be in decent shape all good and running. the motors are

Merc. 40, 145 psi. on both cyl.
Merc 50 130-135 on all 4 Came from factory with 135
Johnson 40, 120 psi on both cyl. Factory was 120-125 psi

the merc 40 hp is in the 80's and the other 2 is in the 70's. I want to know from anyones point of view if mercs are better or the johnson. thanks!

my choice, because parts are more readily available. Johnson 40, 120 psi on both cyl. Factory was 120-125 psi also ease of workiing on them

I'd go with the Johnson also. Parts seem to be much easier to get for the old OMC motors compared to Mercury.

Thanks for the replies guys, so i was looking around some more and found a person selling a 1973 40 hp evinrude. He sayd it runs fine and will have pictures and compression by noon today. So give me some of your thoughts about evinrude. For some reason i'm drawn to evinrudes.

Evinrude and Johnson are both OMC...they are essentially the same motors. If you like Evinrude better that is fine. Other than the color of the paint they are the same as a Johnson of the same year and power rating if from the 70s or 80s at least.
