Hello to all. I'm going to be sanding down my old nicked and gouged gelcoat (scuffing it up a bit) and primer and paint it. I'll be repainting the entire boat. My question is which is the right primer and paint to use? It will be on the trailer most of the time. The gelcoat is in pretty bad shape from previous owner, with patches throught that don't even match. Thanks guys for your input

Welcome to iBoats!
Well you're gunna get ALL kinds of answers to your question. Yacht Dr. will tell you to GelCoat it. Heck I think he even GelCoated his CAR!!!
Others will tell you to use Rustoleum, Others will tell you to use Interlux and yet others will tell you to use Pettit Easypoxy. Each of these have had Great Success and Failures.

Bottom line is, it's your boat so investigate all of the various Marine type paints, READ all of the threads on here about the guys that have painted their boats and their experiences and then go with what makes you comfortable.

I can only speak for me. I am going to be painting my Old 62 Flamingo Glass hull with Pettit Easy poxy using a Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun. Should have it done next month. You are welcome to follow my progress on my thread below. Recovering from Surgery at the moment so I have slowed down for the moment but plan on picking it up next week.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

I'm just sayin...:D

Pro,

I agree with what wood said. Just remeber the prep is basically the same no matter what paint you use. Most people will choice the paint depending on price. That is okay. My philosophy was that since I had to do all that prep work why follow it up with a paint that might not hold up in the long run...meaning I didn't want to have to redo it again anytime soon. So I chose Interlux Perfection. Two part paint systems will hold up to wear and tare better and generally last longer than single part paint systems.

Hello Pro..

Gelcoat it.... ;) ..

How much time and $ do you want to invest would be my question..

Do you plan on keeping it..or just paint and sell with expense being part of the equation..

Do you have a proper place to apply different paints ( roll and tip or spray ).

As you can see there are alot of Variables that are considered in answering a simple prep/paint question..

More details and some pics would be very helpfull :)

YD.

Gel coat application is not something an average boater can easily, or economically, do. YD is correct that gel coat is the way to go...but....that takes a highly expierenced applicator with the correct equipment..$$$$$..and..$$$$

Wood and Greg would be the way I would go.....If it were me.

Ayuh,... Regardless of What you recoat it with,.... Preperation is the key to a Perfect result....

The Smoother it is before it's coated, the Better the quality of the finish product...
