I have a Key West 186 Bay Reef 25" transom w/Johnson 140 4-stroke, long shaft engine. Recommended RPM range is between 5600-6200. I borrowed a ss Stiletto 14 X 22 prop off my other boat for testing which has the same engine except w/short shaft.
The Key West boat w/ 20 gallons gas, 2 passengers, fully loaded with all my gear will do around 43 MPH GPS @ 5500 RPM trimmed out. Hole shot is ok until I fill the transom 40 gallon live well, then it takes awhile to get up.
Question: A 14 X 20 Stiletto should put my RPM's at around 5900 and improve hole shot considerably. Should I go with this prop or opt for a 13-7/8 X 19 Johnson ss prop to get the Rpm's closer to the 6200 max WOT? From my limited experience I know that you reach a point of diminishing returns after you reach a certain point. You get more RPM'S but top end speed suffers. Is it in any way benificial to run at/near red line if you actually loose speed?
