Which seal?

I just bought a "new" '01 LS 9.9 Merc. that seemed to have been only wet once. I took it home put it on the old boat ran it for 3hrs., brought it home and :( I see some brown water/oil goo drippin' from the prop shaft. Which seal is likely to be bad the prop shaft or the drive shaft? This thing was characterized as having seen water once and then stored unused for 5 years. Everything on the exterior looked clean and dry before I used it. It didn't have a scratch. How does the seal come out of the housing, it looks like a 3 pronged spanner wrench is needed? Is the seal some sort of compression arrangement and need tightening or is it an R&R?

Re: Which seal?

Start by checking the gear lube to see if your looking at a bad seal or storage oil coming from the mid section, you may not have a problem

To remove the prop shaft seal you will need to purchase, buy or take the unit to a dealer to have the carrier unscrewed with a spanner to have the seal changed
