Which Trolling Motor

I've got a 2005 Proline 21Sport Center Console boat (21'-8") with a 2005 Mercury Saltwater 150hp engine, approximate weigh of 3400# total. I want to add a trolling motor but have to use a transom mount because the boat has a railing around the bow which would interfere with a bow mount.

My question is, what size (thrust) motor should I get for this boat? I'll be doing most of my fishing on Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Niagara River and want to be sure that I get a motor that will move the boat sufficiently. What should the minimum thrust be for that size boat?

Any suggestions? Also is a Motor Guide motor as good as a Minn Kota motor?

Thanks for any input.

Got a pic of the bow rail?? I have mounted several on bows with rails.

That is a big boat. I would think you would need 70lb or better.

Sort of agree with JB.

That's a big boat and will need 70 lb or more. This means you are into 24v motors and need to add 2 batteries to you boat to power it (you want them separate from your main starting battery).

I'd be more inclined to find a small 4 stroke outboard as you will get more thrust and not have to do the battery thing.

Both Minn Kota and Motorguide make good products (I have one of each) if you decide electric is the way to go.
