I have a 2004 50 Mercury EFI 4 Stroke. I took off the lower unit to check the impeller and when I put it back together I was not sure which way the impeller went as it is directional. I put it in the way that is shown in this diagram:

Is this correct? Thanks for the help.

If you look at the top of your flywheel you will see it's clockwise rotation or right hand the picture you list is of a counterclockwise rotation

Yes Turn the driveshaft clockwise to install the impeller into the housing...

Re: Which way does the impeller go?

So I am confused? I installed it the same way that it is shown in the diagram. The diagram is of my motor. Are you saying that I installed it the right way or the wrong way? Thanks

Re: Which way does the impeller go?

If you reinstalled the old impeller, you should have oriented the blades so that they would compress into the pump body while the driveshaft was being turned clockwise.

In other words, as you turned the shaft clockwise, the free ends of the impeller blades would have 'trailed' to your left.

If you reinstalled the old impeller backwards to its original location, it is very likely to break. The impeller is not, as you assumed, directional. The blades of a used impeller only appear that way because they take a 'set' after being in the pump and always oriented in the same direction.

If this is what has happened, you should not run the motor until the impeller is replaced with a new one. It's really not worth burning up the motor over a $20-or-so part.
