I have a 1986 Force 50 hp on a 1986 Bayliner Capri that did not come with a tach installed. I would like a tach, but can not figure out the wires. Under the dash there are three wires bundled up that are not in use. Purple (tach triggger that reads 5 volts dc), black (ground) and a white (labeled tach but reads four digits wildly fluxuating on digital multimeter)

Do I only need the purple and black in the bundle then find a switched positive 12 v under the dash? or what's up with the white wire?

Thanks,

Mark

I can't answer your direct question. However, I also have a 50 hp Force and I bought a tiny tach online. Works great and very easy to install. I believe it was less than $100 and to install, you ground one wire to the engine and the other you wrap around the spark plug wire a few times. It runs off a battery and also has an hour meter. For more details search the forum for "tiny tach". If you're interested just make sure you get the right model for your application and the right length of wire.

according to the seloc manual the purple wire is your tach signal to the tach, youll need a switched 12 volt positive, and a ground to get the tach to operate good luck don
