hey guys, boat details are in my signature.....
I notice a whining type noise coming from the shifter/throttle box at the helm that seems to get louder with increase throttle...

I have the two lever system common on the 80's bayliners....red handle for throttle, black handle for shifter.
I didn't notice this ever before, perhaps I wasn't paying attention. Wouldn't be the first time.

What is causing that noise? is it normal?

any thoughts?
Everything functions ok aside from a hard pull to shift into reverse, just unsure what the noise is.

I have the same problem but mine sounded as if it was coming from the tach since the tach was broken. I replaced it and has gotten a little better someone told me that the cables may be touching and the vibration putting off the sound. Also i was told to check for air leaks at the windshield acting like a reed or whistle. If i figure it out on my end i will surely post it for you and if you could post what you may find out. It isnt to bad yet but after a few hours it does get old. ALSO I DONT HAVE A BAYLINER MINE IS A STARCRAFT WITH A FORCE OUTBOARD. SO MAY NOT BE THE SAME SITUATION.

Any speakers nearby that it could really be coming from? Might be getting interference from the ignition system feeding into the stereo from a bad ground.

Thanks guys...
The noise is for sure coming from directly below the throttle and shifter handles. It's a mild whistle or whining type noise that increases with increased throttle. I don't believe it does it when in neutral, only in gear.
I'm heading out this weekend and will examine this a bit more thoroughly.

I'm just wondering if this is normal. I never noticed it before, but now I can't help but notice it all the time!

Thanks Don for moving this to where I can get some answers.

Well, dunno if the noise had anything to do with it.........

Shift cable froze up while out this weekend!
It won't move from either end whatsoever, I pulled so hard on the shift handle it snapped the threaded part on the end of the cable. I disconnected the linkage at the drive(underwater btw) and was able to manually shift the drive into gear to get back to the dock.
Gonna tear into it tonight and get a new cable ordered.
