I am getting so much good information here...thanks guys! I have another one for you...my outdrive (Mercruiser Alpha 1) has what appears to be white deposits on it's upper half. I have been told that it is mineral deposits from cold water evaporating off the hot drive. I have also been told to get an outdrive shower, which is a very expensive pipe looking aparatus that you attach to your outdrive. I don't know about all of this... Anybody have any idea what I am talking about here? There is no corrosion on the outdrive at all...it has been a freshwater boat seldom used until I got it a year ago. Now it sees duty in salt, brackish, and fresh water. Mostly saltwater though. These white spots (deposits?)were on the outdrive when I got the boat...

Thanks guys...

I know exactly what you are talking about. I had the same thing happen to my drive this season. I bought CLR in a spray bottle, sprayed the drive down and let it sit for a minute or two, then hosed it off. It got the drive looking as good as new.

What you have been told is correct, A drive shower will help cool the drive, but is not always needed for a stock engine/ drive combo, clean drive and apply a good coat of wax. this will help reduce the white deposits and make it easier to clean next time.

Calcium and lime remover. They have it at Walmart.

'CLR' is the brand name. You can get many othe brands that do the same thing. CLR will be in a grey bottle with (if I remember) a yellow, green and red label. Just get something that says removes calcium and lime, don't leave it on your drive too long (no more than a few minutes) and rinse it off well. Do the wax real well as mentioned above, and you will be good to go.
