The power went out here this morning and man did it get quiet! It is amazing how much so called white noise a house makes.

TO be perfectly honest it makes me want to flip the main and go back off the grid for awhile...it almost seem's as if it wern't off long enoufgh.

Seriously though it does make me wonder what I got plugged in afround here needlesly making it's own humm or buzz that when added up makes for wasted electric and senless noise.

Re: White Noise

I got to have some form of white noise in order to go to sleep at night. I have a fan that stands in the corner of my bedroom that I turn on at night for white noise. At one of my former employers they had what they called a gray noise box. It was a little black box with a speaker and an on/off volume knob. All it did was make a static noise. They paid several hundred bux for it too!!

My BIL installs sound masking systems. That's precisely what they do. They generate white noise and are used in open air office spaces.

Re: White Noise

Most people who have chronic tinnitis want some kind of sound in order to fall asleep. Anything to cover the endless ringing/whistling.

I use a TV set to turn off in about an hour, but it sometimes wakes me when it turns off. Whan that happens I set it on Satellite radio classical music and just leave it on all night.

Outdoors, The Hideout is about as sound pollution free as anywhere I have ever been. Town folk usually remark about the quiet.

Refrigerator and HVAC are the obvious ones. Florescent lights. Computers have those cooling fans inside. Probably a transformer or two on your block maybe humming a little. Neighbors operating power tools.

Anything that powers on & off with a remote control uses power in "standby" mode, not necessarily an audible noise though.

The fridge, fishtank, freezer, computer, hvac, well, ... these are the main offenders this morning. Continually putting there noise in unnotticed until....dead silence. Then it hit's ya just how much noise they really make.

No wonder I like camping so much! But cold and safe food is also nice...I think I'll keep the fridge and heat but I tell ya I'm not so sure the fish are safe!

Re: White Noise

I think what is more amazing than all of the noise is that you don’t consciously process it/hear it. There is a not-understood filtering system buried in our subconscious that hears everything, evaluates it, then decides what audio will be allowed to slide over to conscious hearing ... or not. That’s why people that live near airports don’t always hear the airplanes. Also one of the theories behind the cause of tinnitus; maybe everyone has tinnitus but those that hear it (about 2% of the population) are experiencing a breakdown with the subconscious audio filtering.

I feel for anyone with this problem. It would drive me nuts, they would have to admit me into the looney bin. I can't stand any noise whatsoever at night. I have to sleep with ear plugs so I have total silence.
