I don't think Mercury built any Sea Kings. In the 40s and early 50s SKs were built by Gale, a division of OMC.

Yup, Gale made them.

I just read that FR believes Mercury did make some Sea Kings in the 1940's. I thought only Gale did, but I'm probably wrong. He'd know better than me.

I have a Gale All Models Parts Catalog for 1941-50 that shows Sea Kings as being made by them. Perhaps they only made some of the Sea King models.

I know that Merc made some motors for Montgomery ward and so did Gale depending on the year. I think the Merc motors were badged Wizard. Not sure about the Gale.

Re: Who Built Sea Kings

Well I have Identified my motor and its a 1948 Sea King 1W5 built by Gale for Wards. Someone posted a link on another thread that had all the model numbers and the years and by whome they were made.

As soon as my move to Washington is settled I will start restoring this motor.
I dont know if I can get orginal parts but I am hopeing so. I want it the way it was first sold in 48.

Merc made Sea Kings from 1940 through the late 40s. Their first Sea King was a single cyl (marked model 04-K1)...and looks identical to the non streamline tank version K1 Merc.
