I am thinking about getting my upholstery recovered, and while doing that i was thinking about getting the name embroidered in the combing pads and on the front swivle seats, do you think that would be a draw back from someone buying the boat in a year or two? didnt know how many people change the name as i see it as a sign of bad luck. the name of my boat is "My Other Honey"

My thought is that you will like and a potential buyer probably won't.... fix it for you OR fix it to sell but they are not the same thing

It's a cool name but be aware that many people do change boats' names - there's a name changing ceremony detailed in these forums somewhere. So if you do plan to sell in a year or two, if I were you, I'd embroider the brand logo or something generic rather than your chosen name, this will give the purchaser the flexibility to change the name if they so desire without having to be reminded everytime they sit down of the previous owner's chosen name.

I agree w/ smokeonthewater. No name if you plan on selling.

I thought about changing the name of the boat that I just bought last summer, but after posting a thread and asking some questions, that ceremony came up and I was pretty much freaked out. I decided that changing the name was not as important as keeping my boat floating. I typically am not a superstitious person, but I'm not willing venture down that road, given a couple close calls I had this past summer.

superstisious nonsence, peel off the old name and stick on the new one. If it makes you feel better have a shot of rum and pour a shot over the side for Neptune

Oh, c'mon- there's no need to freak out. It's a matter of appeasing Poseidon/Neptune and isn't that hard to do. There's plenty of high-quality alcohol involved, too- that should ease your concerns :)

Yeah, I sort of agree about the nonsense, but I often fall into that 1% margin of error with a black cloud to follow.

sis and bro in law, did not do the ceremony. boat was horrible money pit. looked great, had to rebuild engine, then after that rebuild seize, they sold it at a big loss.

do the ceremony. dename then rename. do not put anything with the new name on the boat until it has been denamed.

I can see having a naming party...
I am a christian and the whole "god of the sea" thing is contrary to my beliefs...... I have never done it and never will..... I have survived more than one dificult situation and have never had a boat sink. Care to guess the author of this quote?

"You shall not fear other gods, nor bow down yourselves to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them."

I'm with the chief of the boat... do the ceremony! A friend of mine bought a 11 metre one design racing yacht and denamed then renamed, it's now called "Tojo never made it to Darwin"... won heaps of races, despite the somewhat contentious name! :D

Oh, lighten up! It's naming a boat, not worshiping a golden calf ...

Re: who has changed the boats name?

nothing wrong with naming a boat..... never said there was...... My boat will be named as soon as I pick a name and there will be shots all around on the maiden

I don't need to lighten up....I posted MY reasons for not doing a ceremony including an offering to poesiden and posted MY experiences and lack of "bad luck" in decades of boating....

If anyone needs to lighten up it's those who say "do the ceremony or else" ....
BTW wrong commandment ... golden calves fall under idolatry

Nah, never said or even implied do the ceremony "or else". We did the ceremony 'cause it was fun and in no way was it meant to be disrespectful to Christians or anyone of any other religious persuasion. That's what recreational boating should be about! :D

Re: who has changed the boats name?

That wasn't aimed at you and you didn't offend me..... nobody did..... There are some on here that regularly tell people that if they don't do this their boat will sink.. They don't tell people that it is all in good fun and sometimes it is really believed..... It just isn't true so I wanted to share my experiences to put a balance on it.
bon voyage :D

Re: who has changed the boats name?

Hey! I did the ceremony because of the massive quantities of rum, the burning of the socks worn for at least 1 month straight, and the ritual sex with the vestal virgin in the cuddy! All in all, a very satisfying experience and a small price to pay to placate Neptune.
