I've about had it with my @#$%^&* ISP. S-l-o-w, plus pauses in service that last for 5 seconds to several minutes. Sometimes they just cut me off altogether. I have a backup ISP, but they aren't a lot better. :(

I spend a lot of time online, and my attitude is not what it ought to be when it takes me up to half an hour to service ONE post.

You guys would like me to be in a good mood, right? :) Help me out here.

I have seen ads for juno.com and others I don't remember that claim to be up to 5 times faster. A satellite link is out of my budget range for the time being.

Who has what, and how do you like it?

JB, it's faster because it "caches" the related
links to the page you are on in advance. "can" be
faster in some applications...

do you have cable at the hideout? cable is the way
to go if avail. IMHO!

being rural MYself, I completely understand. so
far to local station, best modem in the world can
only connect at 28.8 here. how current is your
hardware?

Trye this link and see just how fast your connection is, mine is 49333, which is good for dial up, I also am running Juno, but not the high speed connection. If you have a slow connection, (Under 40,000) you are going to be slow no matter what.

Internet Connection Speedometer

Have you checked to see if DSL is available. I have Verizon & the speed is about 240kb/s. Check at www.22.verizon.com for availability in your area. The good thing is it uses your exist. phone line & the line can still be used as a phone. Of course the farther out in the sticks you are the less likely the phone line can handle DSL. Cost in my area is about $35.

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Thanks, guys. :)

I checked out the HSDU site and it looks like it might help me out, as I only visit about half a dozen sites regularly. I may give juno a try.

The Speedometer got me at 40Kb, but my ISP didn't pause in the middle of it.

DSL is not available here. . .yet. Sprint has been promising it for a couple of years, but still no go.

I asked Direcway for an info pack. They sent me a file my Acrobat Reader can't read. Go figure.

I'll let you know what I do about this.

Is your acrobat reader 6.0? I used to have 5.0 but could not read a downloaded acrobat file. Once I updated it I was able to open it.

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

JB, I currently use JUNO Platinum dial-up in Florida and I get consistent 50k+ connections. On Long Island the best I ever got was 28.6k. The connection speed depends a lot on your distance from your local phone switching station, mine is 1/4 mile away which helps a lot. The JUNO high speed only speeds up text based stuff, it does nothing on attachments, pictures, etc. The good news is you can easily cancel if you don't like it. Hope this helps.
FROM the JUNO web page, "Juno SpeedBand accelerates certain web page text and graphics when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. Some web pages such as secure or encrypted web pages will not be accelerated. Juno SpeedBand is not a broadband service and actual data transmission rates are not faster than standard dial-up Internet service. Transmission of files including, without limitation, streaming audio or video, digital photographs, MP3 or other music files, executable files and other downloads, is not faster using Juno SpeedBand than with standard dial-up service. Juno SpeedBand may not be compatible with proxy based software or services such as content filters or firewalls. Juno SpeedBand is only compatible with Platinum service and specified browsers."

Acrobat 6.0 "requires" Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. Whats up with that?

JB, if you can get it, get a high speed service. It will change the way you use your computer.

PS - has anyone noticed any substantail change in functionality between Acrobat 3 and 6? :D Why didn't Direcway encode their files in v3.0? :D

JB Directway is way too expensive. You get high speed download, but still slow upload, as you still require a phone line. Its costs about 600 dollars for the equipment and hundreds for installation, as I was told by my Aunt, who has it for her job. They paid for it, because no way would she have been able to afford that herself.

Stay away from Directway. Their DSS service is spectacular, the high speed internet is a joke.

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Sorry, but you must have some water in your fuel. :p Sorry, couldn't resist.
You are confusing Direcway with the now defunct DuoPC product which used a phone line.

Direcway, $379 +$200 for install, $59 a month, NO PHONE LINE. It now works with PC's and Mac's. I've had it for almost 2 years now. Love it.

It is a two-way satellite, feed and uplink. There is a ping delay, so it isn't good for gaming.
Smaller downloads are at 2500+Kb/s, while large software downloads come in at 5-8 seconds per Mb.

Starband is about the same, but they offer 2 levels of service, $39, and $49.
_____________________________________

JB, what info do you need about Direcway?
Most everything should be on their website.
If not, let me know what you need, I will look on the subscribers website.

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

Thanks, Roscoe.

I need to know what the current price is for start-up, whether it can be spread out for a year or so, what the current cost is per month.

I keep getting different numbers on all of these things, and they keep getting lower.
I inquired by phone a year or so ago and got a quote of $700 cash up front, then $79.95 per month. Now I am hearing, second hand, much smaller numbers. Does it matter if I already have DirectTV??

I am retired, on a modest fixed income, and can't just write a check for hundreds of bux unless I sell some investment that is providing part of that small income. Every time I do that the income gets smaller. That makes it a very important decision.

Thanks for any info you can get for me. :)

Re: Who has dial-up high speed ISP?

HI JB, here's the latest from DirecWay site.
You would be looking at a DW4000 2-way satellite internet system.

Here is a picture of the reciever and transmitter that will sit next to your computer. It is the size of a cigar box. Their site says you need a network interface card to connect, but mine connects thru a USB port on my computer.

dw4000-itr-iru.jpg

Here is the dish, an oval one, FCC requires a licensed installer do the job.

direcwaydish.jpg

You can get an adapter to receive your Directv on the oval dish, but really no advantage.

There are no deals or discounts for Directv subscribers.

2 offers are on the website.

#1 - $399.99 for dish, cable, rc/tx modem
plus $199.99 for install
then $59.99 a month for service.

Offer #2 may appeal to you, maybe not.
Its $99.99 up front, including install and equipment,
then $99.99 a month for the first 15 months.

Plan 2 costs you an extra $99 over the 15 months, but no large upfront cost.

The dish points almost exactly the same direction as your existing dish (south).

The dish must be secured to a solid surface, either a building or a 2" pipe, not the small pipe they use on Directv.

Order phone number is 1-866-556-9655

You can test your computer to see if it will handle Direcway, you will have to go to this page, and click on the test link in the center of the page.
http://www.purchasedway.com/
