the recent thread about not having seen snow got me thinking about how many people haven't been to or even seen the ocean. i have friends that live in Florida that have never seen snow and i have family in northeast Ohio that have never been to the ocean. the salt air, the wildlife you can see from shore, your first unintentional gulp of saltwater that has you gagging, sand so hot that you get blisters running to the waters edge? walking down the coast in South Beach not paying attention and coming up on a "special" beach.

I've never been to the ocean, per say. I've been to the Gulf, which is really one and the same in my book. What surprised me is, how the water is really salty. I expected some saltiness, but, geeesh....... You look down the beach and see a haze of salt in the air....... I still love it down there....

Took my college buddy from Erie, PA to the shore with us on vacation a number of years ago. He had never seen the ocean which I though was odd at the time.

I have been to the Gulf, east and west coast. Nothing like the wave action of the East and West. I prefer waves to the Gulf. But the Gulf is enjoyable for its very white sandy beaches, water front Restaurants and calmer boating waters. Go to Myrtle Beach or Charleston SC and have fun in the 90+ degree(water temps in the summer) waves and sandy beaches

Growing up in L.A. this question seems silly, but I have showed the Pacific to those who have never seen the Ocean too. I've lived on the Gulf, and I find it less different than some others say. However, if you haven't seen this type of stuff with your own eyes, you need to:

TheWedgeNewportCA.jpg

This is The Wedge in Newport Beach. You can see the entrance to Newport Harbor in the background. The jetty creates a somewhat unique wave as the biggest South swells of the Summer "bounce" off it and create a huge peaky wave right on the beach. It is rarely surfed, but body surfers and body boarders consider it a Mecca. At the same time the boats in the background are unaffected and it is a relatively easy entrance.

The first pic kinda shows how it forms, this one shows it's potential

Yep walk north and you will see two guys holding hands and making out. Walk south and you will see the most gorgeous topless females from all over the world. South Beach is a unique place in the United States to say the least. It is probably standard operating procedure in the rest of the world.

I've seen the ocean in NY, Virginia...and swam in it once in Panama City, Fla.

Never been on a boat in the ocean, looking forward to fishing trips in Alaska and for tuna on the west coast...someday:D

Ok for me this almost seems strange, growing up on an island, where ocean is all the water you know. its strange on a boating forum to find people who have never seen an ocean . but then i remember there are lakes out there big enough to go boating in :)
Only saw snow a few years ago for the first time though , unlike the ocean, im happy to see it next on a post card LOL its beautiful there:p

No Fuss :D

Now, just what are those Oceans??
Pacific
Atlantic
Antarctic
Indian
Arctic
......that's five, any others come to mind?. Maybe it was the 7 seas I was thinking about.

Growing up in CA spent much time in the ocean. Friggin Cold!
Been to Hawaii a couple times and it's amazing to just walk in and be comfortable.;) Clear Water, FL was warm too and Maine's H2O seemed a lot warmer than CA's to me. The currents......

I am living the dream. Lived up in the interior and did the mountains and snow. Along with the big game hunting/ fresh water fishing.

Now we are living on the coast living a new dream and marvels of the salt water.:D

4"...interesting, I didn't know that.
On the flip side, when we were at the Bay of Fundy (New Brunswick/Scotia) with the highest tides in the world we walked in with the tide once. It was kind of spooky watching behind you as the tide came in as fast as you could walk towards the beach away from it.
On a few beaches they actually have the equivalent of life guards walk you off the beach and up the ladder to ensure you get out in time.
Very cool stuff really.

I've never seen the ocean or been anywhere close to one. Biggest body of water I've ever seen was Lake of the Ozarks

The Great Lakes ? Lake Ontario sunrise

No saltwater corrosion; no tracking sand everywhere; No hurricanes to worry about; No 40 ft waves; No fish that can kill you or bite your leg off; No oil spills (yet)

Lake Erie can have storms that make you think you are in a Hurricane.

Re: Who here has never been to the ocean?

Living as I do now near Lake Superior, it acts every bit like an ocean...

Except for the salt smell...I miss that salt smell, and every time I go back to the Pacific coast, I recall how much I miss it!

Hi Tom..I may add..no jellyfish to sting you, banged up toes from going barefoot, no red tide to make you itch all over, no dry skin from the salt air, no carpet in the home, no auto rusting from the top working it's way down to the running boards. No tide to worry about, no rough or dangerous inlets to navigate, no need for $2000 fishing reels that need constant attention, I could go on about the pearls of SaltLife. Not for the timid, but for some us...it's a way of life.

Re: Who here has never been to the ocean?

Charleston SC had well over 90 degree ocean temps this summer. This brought in the Jelly Fish. 100s of stings reported. Well above average year. Growing up(60s and 70s),we went to Myrtle Beach every summer. I never got stung one time or heard about people getting stung. I don't want to get stung on vacation either. I have had enough with the wasp stings around here LOL. That is the only thing I don't like about the Ocean. The stinging and biting critters. The only bites you worry about in Lakes are the pesky little Brim(sp?)
