I have luvered cabin doors, a hatch, and a 2ft. pulpit all made of beautiful teak wood. Unfortunately, the boat's previous owner thought it would be a better idea to laquer the doors and hatch to protect them from the sun and rain. I guess no one ever told him about teak OIL. However, I now have the task of stripping and refinishing these items. The hatch I can handle with a little sand paper and time. The luvered door though look to be much more involved, and time consuming. Is it true that you can have teak dipped to remove all old laquers and varnishes? And if so, is it costly? Can this service be found easily on the mid-east coast? Or can it be done by me in my shop? Anyone with any experience on this would be greatly appriciated.

Put the time into it and sand it all down. The beauty of teak is worth the work. Be very careful if it is not solid teak especially on the edges and corners. If it is solid then I would get in my car and go to the nearest furniture manufacturer or probably any other place manufacturing in wood. They can sand any flat surfaces in minutes and probably wont mind doing it for you. Just show up there bringing your teak, don't call before you get there. When you get it sanded down, use fine steel wool with teak oil to work the oil in the wood. This will also remove the small fibers that rises when getting wet and keep it nice and smooth.

Regards
Mike

if your going to use steel wool to refinish your teak your wasteing your time, money and effort. always use bronze wool or stainless wool or you will have rust spots all over your hard work.. have fun...

I feel your pain dude!! My Post

My teak storage cover looked great after I sanded it down and oiled it but it was a lot of work. Yours will be even more work but I think it would be worth the trouble.

is there some reason you can't use a chemical paint stripper on teak? I ahve stripped plenty of varnishes and lacquers on all kinds of wood (but never teak)

Another option is to use a belt sander with 16 grit sandpaper to blast off the lacquer. You can switch to 40 once you have most off.
