We're considering moving north to Jacksonville (Florida) because the job market there is better for me. So I'm looking for info on which parts of town are better to live in, and which parts may be less desirable and should be avoided.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the south side, Mandarin, or even as far east as Deercreek & Deerwood, but that's just a shot in the dark until I can get some good first-hand info about the area.

I'm liking the concept of being close to a large lake and yet not far from the coast there. Input, opinions, and suggestions are appreciated!!

Been here a year now. I work in the deerwood/gate park area & it's a nice place to be. I'd avoid north Jax. Not all bad per say, but I'd stick with southside if at all possible. If you have kids in middle school or up plan on private schools. Although I work in south Jax I actually live in St. Johns county for this reason. Schools there are superior, & the county was ranked #1 in the state for 2nd year in a row. Orange Park is ok, but traveling 295 at peak can be a serious pain at peak hours. All in all I like Jax, but if looking at a map I personally would stay south of Beach.

Jacksonville Native, 62 years. i have seen a lot of changes. it does not matter where you live. rush hour is rush hour. i agree south of I 10 , and north of the Airport, are better areas.

if looking to buy, as anywhere in FL, there are a lot of repo's.
i personally know several families, in St Johns county, that let there high payment houses go, and are renting the the same house, down the street, for 60% of the mortage payment.

I'm up in Fernandina Beach, but I had been living in Jacksonville near TD. There are definitely places you wouldn't want to live, but before I'd decide what side of town, I'd figure out where you're most likely gonna work. Sitting in traffic sux.
