Who made the Mariner

Can someone tell me who made the Mariner 40hp in 1982/1983? I thought I read it was Yamaha, but I was told that was wrong?

It was a joint venture of Mercury and Yamaha, the large engine were Mercury and most under 60HP twins were Japanese

That is correct, but..... Sometime in the 80's and I don't remember when exactly, the FTC raised questions over the anti-competitive nature of the venture and Mercury and Yamaha discontinued the venture with Mercury bying out Yamaha's interest. At that point Mariner became all Mercury.

There were some Yamaha built engines sold as late a 1992 just not in the USA
