Always nice to hear how people became involved in fishing. Some grew up with it and for others it came later.
Suppose to be 15 degrees below tonite,a week day,and two more days of work. Was thinking how my dad use to take us fishing on the weekends(no boat so always from shore) and how i enjoyed it.
Later in my early teens we had a neighbor who loved the great outdoors, was in his early 50's, grown kids out of state so no one to fish with.
He started to invite me and my dad fishing. My dad not really liking to be in a boat(something to do with WW-II) I usually would go with him.
He had a 7.5 Jhonny and he would rent a boat, supply the bait, drive etc. At the most, I would get my mom to make some sandwiches for lunch but I don't think he really cared.
I am sure others have just as good a rememberance.

Yep same here. My dad would take me with him.
Never had a boat back then, just went to the river bank and had a good time.
Lots of memories of back then.
I had a chance to take him on a boat 2 times before he died and they were great times as well.

Yep my pop taught me too. I also fondly remember the days up at my grandfathers place on the lake. Spent many many hours there fishing when I was a kid.

I remember once my cousin Mark and I were in grandpops boat (12 foot wood) on that lake and he could not buy a bite and I was reelin em in as fast as I could cast. Mark made me trade seats in the boat with him. Well needless to say he still could not get bit, I figure his rod and reel is still resting on the bottom of that lake to this day. :D

hello.
For me it was my mother talking about how her father (g-d bless his soul) owned fishing rights in certain canals and drainages and how he had nets and traps. My other grandfather gave me an eighteen foot bamboo fishing pole which I would take and "plant" on the side of the river because it was too heavy to hold for a ten year old kid.It was with that pole I caught my first zander (european walleye). The rest is history.

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

I was born and raised in PA with a pond across the street from our home. My parents tried scaring me by telling me and my younger brother that the pond had alligators and quicksand and forbid us to go there without an adult. However, like Adam was tempted in the Garden of Eden, I also was tempted to visit the pond. I usually armed myself with a 12 foot bamboo rod. However, one day I was reading a comic book and noticed an add which enabled me to earn a spinning rod by selling greeting cards. I filled out the information, put it into the mailbox and two weeks later the greeting cards arrived. It was about a month or so until I sold all the cards and sent the money in with my order for the new spinning rod. Every day thereafter, I impatiently awaited the delivery of my new tool. It seemed like forever, but eventually the mail man showed up with my special delivery. This new rod was the catapult for my growing passion for fishing.

My mom used to wait for my Dad to return from Salmon fishing at Winchester Bay Here on the Oregon coast! She would let me fish for Tom Cod off the dock while we waited! I have loved fishing for anything that swims ever sence! Grew up with a fishing pole in one hand and a 22 cal. rifle in the other! I had an Awesome Childhood!

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

My old man grew up on the water so he fished a lot when he was younger. When I was a kid, he'd take me whenever he would go which was a couple of times a year.
I still remember when he came home one day with a minn kota trolling motor and a battery - that was great! We could rent a boat and get around the lake twice as fast as rowing!
For the past few years, he seems to have lost much interest in fishing and I think I've got more interest in it. He's been out on my boat once...he had fun, but he's got a bad shoulder so all of that casting really hurts him after a while. Also, I guess he's tired of fresh water fishing but he still gets excited for the bay or ocean fishing - I guess because it's less casting and the prize is bigger.

AARRGGHH!! WHEN'S IT GOING TO GET WARMER OUT! I WANT TO GO FISHING!!!!!

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

i was raised by a single mother, so anyway she would drop me & my brother off at the boat docks in the ventura marina so we could fish while she went shopping. we would reach under the docks & pull muscle from them, we'd crush a pile of them up to start the feeding frenzy and have a good time, man we caught alot of fish there! those were good days!!!

My dad. He made me a cane pole with 10 feet or so of mono on it to dangle over the side of the boat. I caught 4 rainbow trout my first time out, and the very next day my dad went and bought me a new rod and reel (zebco 202). He also hooked me on beer that day..."just a sip, and don't be tellin your mother, boy."

Just natural. Here in Cape Ann Massachusetts We were the commercial fishing capatial of the world. We were a fishing community and that is what the majority of people did for a living.
Most of us when we were kids would grow up around the docks while our fathers were out fishing. They had no interest in taking us kids recreational fishing after fishing for 12 days on the ocean. There were plenty of fish in them days. We would catch 5 gal buckets of flounder and mackeral off of the breakwater. And around the wharfs we would catch G.I. cans of pollack and give them away to the less forunate.

I have no idea how I caught the fishing bug. :D

No one in my family liked to fish. I always went with other kids or by myself.

My son, now 33, hates fishing and won't even eat fish.

Adoption is the only answer I can come up with.

I would have to say from my dad. Even though we didn't always see eye to eye on most things, once we got in the boat everything was good. Now it's my turn to pass it on to my kids. Awesome memories.

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

My first experience was fishing in a stocked cement trout pond somewhere in Kentucky. I was probably 5 or 6. my sister and I caught our limit of 24 each.

A few years later I would fish the creek with friends wading several miles catching rock bass(Bluegill) sunfish, red eyes and an occasional bass once in a while. We lived in a neighborhood just on the edge of town surrounded by farmland and the creek. Houston creek I believe.

When I was stationed in Gulfport Miss. Friends and I would rent a waler from special sevices and catch loads of cat fish in Biloxi Bay. Also the Wolf River.

Didnt start catching bass (first bass)till I came to Florida. We have some monsters in the man made lake behind my house.

I've come close to boating a few but didnt have a net...maybe this weekend....

I'd have to thank my grandpa, God bless him.
He had a old wooden trolley manufactured by
Boeing, when they were in the boat manufacturing
business. He would take me out into the Strait
of Juan-da Fuca 'SPL' when I was very young and
smitted me with my fish'n disorder.

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

I had an old maid aunt who lived with my grandparents. She was the only member of the family who ever fished. When I was about 8 or 9 she bought me a Zebco and took me fishing with her. We never caught anything but we always had fun.
Later in life I met LF. She could have talked me into anything. We started fishing together for brook trout in streams and for pike in the lake her mom lives on. When we moved to Texas she talked me into buying a boat. I don't swim and had never been on anything smaller than a ferry in my life so I wasn't too thrilled with the idea at first. We've had 2 other boats since and I am my happiest when I'm fishing with her.

My Dad also,I am so greatful for all the many trips he took me and my brothers ,colorado, and wyoming,He could have gone with guys he worked with instead of us whining boys, but the whining boys grew up to be best friends with dad,we still go often and cherish every day for I know time is running out to be together,The memories are truely
priceless,
To all the dads out there who take there kids fishing or whatever you do together, or the kids that did not have fathers and someone else took you fishing, you have gave somthing that words can't explain.
The best things in life cannot be seen or touched they must be felt with the heart.

Re: Who started your love of fishing?

My grandfather taught me how to fish and I will always thank him for that. I visit him at his lake house and spend the whole time fishing with him as a child. He passed away this last year and left me a little inheritance. So in honor of him I bought a fishing boat and continue to fish and catch some for him every year.....thanx granpa.
