I have a 1988 18 foot bowrider with a 3.0 mercruiser and a alpha 1 gen 1 drive.

Last weekend while looking at a friends boat ( a 1987 16 foot bowrider with the same motor and drive as mine ) I noticed something weird.......

His drive has a grease fitting on the lower steering pivot and mine does NOT.

I have no way to grease this pivot point.......anyone know why?

thanks

it seems to me that my '88 Alpha had five grease fittings on the outdrive and bell housing. One on each tilt pivot, one top and bottom swivel and one for the gimbal bearing. You might want to reexamine lower swivel point.

I saw on the other drive exactly where the fitting SHOULD be for the lower pivot point, it's just mine does NOT, not even an spot where it looks like they tried to machine it for a fitting.

I'm just curious why they abandoned this pivot point for grease?
I've always believed " if it moves, lube it "

They also eliminated the one up top but it can be reinstalled very easily.
After replaceing the steering pin and seal on a unit ,i redrilled for the upper grease fitting.can also be done on the boat.
