Re: Who was the Idiot that decided....

Don't know the answer but I would guess it came after practical experience showed that dirt can foul up the workings of the cylinder.

I get a very slight amount of grease seepage that collects on the outside. Without the cap the wheels and tires would be greasy and the buddies would be filthy. My covers are tight and no water leaks in.

The wheels in your pics show salt water use and a lack of maintenance. I take the covers off monthly to inspect. If I was in salt water I would inspect after each use. Looks like there is no grease there and it had not been flushed with fresh water very often.

The boat and trailer is new to me, I am finding all sorts of surprises. Yes it is a California boat so all it has ever seen is saltwater - bearing buddies are cheap so a new set will go on my list along with wheel bearings and seals

Thanks

But knew it would be a challenge :)

The covers work well to keep the grease from flying. Not so well if your using the standard Bearing Buddies in saltwater. Order the SS Bearing Buddies and its a non-issue.

more like no maintenance at all....from the looks, i doubt the previous owner even pumped any grease in them when he installed them.

the covers are nice to keep out dirt and grime, and would never look like that again, since "you" will grease them every so often.

im in fresh water but check them almost* every time i use it. wether they need grease or not its worth the 30 seconds to check.

Re: Who was the Idiot that decided....

Thanks for the input I like the SS, didn't know there were any

I agree that the trailer was not taken care of as well as the boat

The rust inside was primarily due to the covers trapping water (saltwater) inside, covers are nice if they don't leak, however, they keep the water in if they do.

I will decide if I will put covers on the next set when I get them, without the covers at least they will be hosed off when I wash the boat and trailer down after use

Interesting! I guess that's the downside to using the covers; that's worse than having grease all over the wheel from not using the covers.

I have to ask them I wouldn't think that the hubs would or should leak, else they would give the covers away with the hubs

Re: Who was the Idiot that decided....

I have dust covers on mine. I do not run without them. I have never had them leak. I replace the covers if they start to look worn(couple bucks) A lesson/trick I learned is with the covers on and hub pumped with grease there is a little bulg from the grease fitting in the middle of the cover that I lightly push to make sure hubs are filled with grease. I checked last trip no bulg no grease in the bearing my rear seal was blown out grease all over inner rim. I would have burned up a axle on the freeway. One side note do NOT OVER FILL that is hard on the inner seal.

Anything used improperly will show damage, the key is, are you going to use them properly? I have one simple rule, if I purchase a used item, I always assume they guy before didn't have a clue..

I have always used the covers and have never had a set look like this..

Looks like another sad case of neglect from those photos.
