It look's like it came out of a showroom! Outstanding job.

Nice job. Very satisfying when projects turn out nice like this. By the way, I had a power pack that exhibited the same problem as yours. Mine would act up cold then fire and work fine for days. While troubleshooting I was poking and pushing on things and it turned out that the slightest pressure on the pack caused it to fail on one cylinder. Replaced it and she runs great.

Good job Mike!
As for the rich (apparent) condition, that will change when you take her out and get some time on it.
What's your altitude??

Thanks for the words guys. I'm real pleased with the results thus far.

reeldutch the box is just a 4'x2'x2' plywood box with 2x2 nailers at the corners and pl4000 glue to seal it up. A 1" hole in the bottom for a drain. Seal the hole with a standard 1" drain plug.

Kenny Indianapolis is about 750' ASL and I'm sure the double oil has some influence on it as well

Yea, you should be ok after a few runs on the lake.
I was curious as to your altitude because I got by without re-jetting where I'm at in Ks.,(3700ft) with Boyesens because I was rich with sea-level jets on both circuts.
Should be good...Good luck!

I'm curious though. How did the expense of the rebuild of the motor compare with the cost of a new one. You did a lot of work and replaced a lot of bits.

Mike,

Looks great, congrats on a job well done. :)

BTW, I sent you an e-mail a while back with the part numbers and such for that cowl seal you were looking for, but never heard anything back. Did you get it, or do you need me to go back through my old e-mails and send it again?

Just my $0.02 worth,
Joe

John,

i think a rebuild on a v4 could be as much as
1500 to 2500.

but a new v4 will cost you almost 4 times a rebuild.

yes it will take a lot of time but it is a great experience and you learn a lot.
still we all need help from the pro's
and it is a rewarding and fun project

reeldutch

Ditto reeldutch . This kind of thing is more about the journey than the destination for me.
I'm having a blast with it. This whole project is really "practice" for the next one!

John this stuff ain't cheap, for sure, but have you looked at the price of new motors. Heck they're pushing $10K. I don't count my labor. No way could this be justified paying to have it done. That would be pricey.

Sorry Joe, I did get your message. I thought I buzzed you back...apparently not though.

Re: Whoo Hoo she runs

when i rebuild mine i spend a couple hrs here and there whenever i had some free time.
i didnt count the hrs i worked on it because i do'nt care i love it.
i'm sure the teardown took me 50% of the time.
because i didnt want to break anything.
the buildup can go pretty quick. it took me i guess 1 day to put the block together and place it back on the motor.

may be i spent 50 or 60 hrs of work in it.
could be more.
but that includes putting new trim pump on painting etc etc.
i think if you only rebuild a powerhead and the teardown go's wel it could be done in 2 days.

reeldutch

Outstanding!

A real Johnnyrude! ;)

I always liked the engine cover on the '73's. It has allot potential with that "rude" blue mid and lower unit.
