Re: WHO'S GOT DIESEL?

I own a 01' Dodge 3/4 ton with a Cummins Turbo. With 50K miles now it's been a good truck. I plow with in the winter, and probably 20% of the miles on it were pulling either my tractor or boat, both in excess of 5k pounds.

The only problem i've had so far was a bad vac. pump, which was replaced under warranty.

Recently installed a "power chip", you can tell a bit of difference around 2k RPM's. I bought the chip mainly for the milage which it did help! Pulling and loaded with gear ect. it used to get 12mpg, with the chip it is up to 15-16mpg.

Owned a Ford power stroke before that, also a good truck. Test drove a duramax, never been a chevy fan though?

Diesel engines are 30% more efficient than gas burners, therefore you can go 30% further on a gallon of diesel than you can on gasoline. Diesle engines produce far more torque than gas burners and are the engine of choice for vehicles that are used to pull heavey loads. For any cross section of full sized similarly equiped trucks, the diesels get better posted mileage than gas burners. About the only down side is finding a station that sells diesle.

Ford F-250 Crew/cab lariat 4x4 6.0l auto shortbox
I try to change my truck every 6 mths.
The U.S.A has quite a large appetite for these
trucks used. The U.S dollar is on the move upward
in the last few days so my 2003 will be gone soon
and I have a 2004 on the ground to replace it.
I love my Ford diesel. :p

Re: WHO'S GOT DIESEL?

I guess I'll represent GM. I have a '97 GMC 2500 HD with a 6.5L turbo Detroit Diesel Allison and it is a fantastic truck all around. It pulls my 6,600 lb Formula like it isn't even there and that's no bull. I bought it with 100,000 mi to pull the boat and other odd things and have wound up driving it all the time I like it so much

And as crazy as this sounds, I beat a restored 69 Comaro off the line - They guy in the Comaro was totally humilated and I laughed for 2 days.

The Pumpkin on the rear end is enormous! The rear break drums are enormous. This truck is built to last a very long time...

Re: WHO'S GOT DIESEL?

I'm also looking for a truck to pull my boat around.

This town is a GM town since there is a plant here. Funny thing is you can't find any 3/4 or 1 ton Fords here anywhere, but there are lots of Chevys on the lots. However there are way more Fords than Chevys on the roads around here.

My question is on the transmissions, I have heard that auto's are more likely to fail vs manual. My wife can't drive standard and wants it to be auto. It doesn't matter to me except for the realiability.

The truck I am leaning towards is a F450 with a 35' Versalift bucket. Money made on aerial work can pay for my boat/truck fuel... :D

Re: WHO'S GOT DIESEL?

I am not a huge Ford fan - I know too many mechanics who make their living off Fords and drive Chevys. I also have a cousin with a gas F150 and it can't get out of its own way. We burnt up his tranny pulling the Formula just a few times with it. It could barely tow it at all.

However, I have a firend with a new Ford F350 HD Diesel dually and it is really nice and flies!

Yeah, the F150 is basically a pickup truck body over cars drivetrain.
The man is talkin' trucks!
Mega CID, intercooled turbocharged aspirated, pressure popped oilburners.

I have several close friends with The Dodge Cummings and several with the Ford Powerstroke.
Both are fine hardworking pieces of equipment.
I've had to work on both of them from time to time.

I prefer the Powerstroke.

Re: WHO'S GOT DIESEL?

Well, I have 2 of them
1 is a '89 Ford with the 7.3IDI motor with the Banks turbo kit on it and 5 speed and it does a good job.

The second one is a '96 Chevy Silverado with the 6.5TD and auto and it too does a good job.

No problems with either one.
