First off, i've been on here a lot kately trying to get my motor running, and I finally got it going, all issues resolved except I'm just waiting for new shift buttons to come in from the state of Oregon. I was just wondering guys, I have a '62 40 h.p. Evinrude electric (selectric) shift gears. If the battery goes dead, it defaults into neutral gear. Why do I have a rope to pull start the engine because I would not get the gears to go into forward gear without the battery any way, or am I missing something here??? What good is a running engine if you cannot get the gears out of neutral? Does not make sense to me, so I thought MAYBE there is someway to get the gears into forward with no battery once the motor is running? Thanks again!!

once the motor is running it supplies its own power so you will be able to shift.

As long as the generator is working.

lol no generator equals no spark so shifting will not be your biggest problem. the rope is one step from the whistle and flare gun.

The mtr will still run without the generator because it has magneto ignition. No generator + dead battery = no shift.

So basically, can I check my generator out by starting the engine, disconnecting the battery and see if I can get the motor to shift? If it shifts the generator is good, and if it doesn't shift, the generator is bad?? If so, that's a good way to check the generator correct?

no.....not a good way.....never good to disconnect a battery on a running motor. if you dont have a volt meter on the dash then get a hand held at wallworld for a few bucks. test battery voltage it should be in the high 12v range then start motor and it should go up to about 13-14 volts if it stays the same or goes down a little then you have a charging problem.

Not really. The generator will act really weird without a battery connected.
Start the motor, and measure if the voltage goes up with the engine speed. The generator models typically came with an ammeter attached.

Never disconnect a battery cable from a running mtr, The voltage will go sky high and damage the generator or the alternator. The bottom line here is, if your have a low battery and the gen is still working, you will still be able to shift it.

OK. Got ya. I do have a meter in the dash, but it is not connected to anything at the time. I will need to look at the wiring diagram and see if I can hook it up the way it should be. I have a hand held meter that I can check it with when I run it again. I bought the boat last fall and I'm putting things together a little at a time. Almost have the motor completed. Just waiting on some gear shift selector buttons to come in from Oregon. The motor runs sweet!!! Next repair: Amp meter on dash. Thanks!
