Why are rebuilt powerheads so expensive?

These motors aren't that complex, a piston set costs $100, machine shops charge $10 per hole to bore, and labor is probably less than 10 hours in a production environment. I'm trying to figure out how a powerhead can cost $2500 when the parts and labor come in at less than $500. Are the bearings and seals worth another $2000?

Some of those powerheads have crankshafts which exceed $2000 alone. Exactly what powerhead are you speaking of, and are you speaking of purchasing a rebuilt powerhead... or having a original powerhead rebuilt?

I'm looking at 100 HP Merc 6-cyl. Purchase a rebuilt powerhead. Mine makes a rather loud rattling noise that I suspect is caused by loose bearings.

Howdy, Aeronutt.

What do you estimate it would cost you to do it if you charged yourself $60 an hour and then put a 2 year warranty on it?
