Why do some people use this forum to argue in a arrogant manner?

It honestly comes off like their trying too hard to make themselves seem like they are intelligent which is a sign of an inferiority complex. I think that criticizing others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves. I also think some people just like to hear themselves talk because they are bored or OCD. I have never heard a smart argument.

I've noticed it too.. It's only a few, and I've just kind of gotten to where I give up and stop responding.. I don't need the last word.

The internet is a great source of information, unfortunately it makes some people experts on subjects that they really are not experts on.

With that said, there is a huge amount of good information on this forum as well, I have found it very helpful.

You are wrong, and not smart enough to realize it ... :p :D Just kidding, you are right, there are just some people that have to validate themselves. Then there are other jerks, like myself, who just like to have fun and sometimes cross the line, although unintentionally, because we think it is funny, when in fact it is hurtful and mean spirited to the OP. I have been working on that ...

Perhaps I have an extrordinary thick skin, but I don't see it at all.

People have differing opinions. Nothing could possibly be more boring as everyone agreeing with each other, or being Eddie Haskel nice.

Bigdee, that is the most ludicrous question I've ever heard. It's a good thing I don't have an inferiority complex or OCD and am neither arrogant, insecure, nor bored; wait a minute.......I am bored, otherwise I wouldn't be on here! Might be that other stuff too. Who knows? I'll ask the admiral tonight. I'm sure she'll give me a candid assessment. Sadly (and seriously) though, your question is valid and could be applied to our society in general. It seems the more connected we become the less connected we become. Know what I mean? As others have mentioned, it's easier to be a jackass when hiding behind a keyboard or smart device. It's a big and growing problem that saddens me.

The purpose of these forums is to help each other by sharing information, knowledge and experiences, really no place for arrogance or insults. The longer I'm on these forums, the more I realize all that I don't know about boats and motors, but I've learned a few useful items in my 67 years and if I can share any of that and help anyone out in any way, then it's my pleasure to do so. I realize lots of the remarks are made in fun and jest, and it's fine to disagree, but no need to rip into a guy about what he doesn't know. Good Luck!

People are gonna argue....that's just the way it is.
But arrogance and insults have no place here. There are folks who are dead set that their way is the only way and that is the end of the discussion....I feel for them.
I try to take them with a grain of salt and realize they are who they are and just let it go.

Re: Why do some people use this forum to argue in a arrogant manner?

There was a day, as noted by Bond-o, when foul language and personal insults were common here. Those fights were usually over politics, religion or other controversial topics, but also included such sanitary topics as oil and . . .um. . .awl and lubrication.

Our current rules forbid controversial topics, rude or insulting language, bashing and other demonstrations of aggression. I suppose it would be nice to forbid arrogance, too, but if we did that there might not be many of us left. :(

If you think a post is unfriendly or arrogant, report it. We Mods just might agree with you. If so we will take appropriate action.

Yeah, pretty mild stuff these days.

There is value in persistence if there are serious technical misconceptions that invade/pervade/dominate a thread. Bubba and I have been involved in one of those and I am sure to some it would seem like he and I are both being arrogant. With that noted bigdee, and considering JB's comments, if you would PM me an example I'd gladly look at it and give you my opinion as to the relative arrogance level. That would be the RAL . . .

I agree. Anyone that thinks THIS candyland forum is harsh should not spend a single second on a political forum.

The meanest thread here is the nicest thread on a political forum. Even the well moderated ones are 100x more harsh than this candyland site.

Re: Why do some people use this forum to argue in a arrogant manner?

I actually like some of the arrogance. It provides some good entertainment and like was mentioned above, it would be boring if everyone agreed. I think there is a difference in being arrogant with out the ability to accept when you are wrong. I admit I am arrogant at times but will be the first to concede when I am wrong. Sometimes in your situation, in your corner of the world, what is normal comes off as arrogant in a typed forum. Then sometimes what you consider as arrogant is just someone being correct. The funny thing is in business I know arrogant people and arrogant people that will admit when they are wrong and move on. I can think of a few of those first people who have been stuck in their carreers for years wondering what went wrong. I started off years ago out of a prestigious college as arrogant yet quite often correct and quickly realized what works in your college bubble doesn't fly in the real world. I don't know that I consider the internet quite as the real world.

Re: Why do some people use this forum to argue in a arrogant manner?

I agree with everyone that this is a pretty mild and well behaved forum (that is the nature of most technical people)...but there will always be a few that display improper communication skills. I have had the pleasure of working with some very intelligent professionals in the technical and engineering world and I have found that the most successful ones are the least likely to argue and criticize. A good engineer will listen. He/she may have to filter the information but even the dull, ignorant and arrogant have their story and if you sift through enough horse manure you just might find a horse!

I am curious. Does telling someone their opinion is "Hogwash" an example of arrogance?

Arrogance, is a subjective perception, what one considers arrogant, may very well be acceptable to another. I can honestly say, I have not seen many topics on this forum that I would consider anyone really being arrogant, at least in my opinion..
