How come some motors use surface gap spark plugs? Is there any benefit over the arch type? Thanks for any info.

It may be be of no technical significance but I recently changed to approved type normal plugs from rim fire on a V6 merc as I was told it would make the engine tick over better. However it was an absolute disaster as the engine was almost impossible to start when hot. Must be something in the manufacturers recommendation in my experience.

Plugs are exteeeeeeeemly important in how well any 2 stroke engine runs. If an o/b comes from the factory with brand A, stick with brand A. (period). It is also very important to stick with the manufacurers exact recomendations as to heat range.<br /> Engines are designed to run with either gapless or gap type plugs when they are on the drawingboard. Switching from one to the other is a recipe for trouble.

Some motors come with surface gap plugs so that when you start having plug problems Champion can sell you a good set and make a fair profit. Capitalism in the marine industry.
