Good Morning,
I'm new to boating and the forum. As my first boat experance I just acquired a 1989 VIP 16" with a 1990 Nissan 90 HP 2 stroke with no owners manual. Main use will be fishing with my to young boys It seems to run well out of the water with the hose hooked up. The motor starts right up if you prime it first, after a week of cleaning and checking things I have found a few issues that I am concerned about. . I took it out to the local lake in OKC dropped it in and putted out but when I engage the engine in forward or reverse drive I get a solid warning tone that goes away when I put it back in neutral also when you try to accelerate the motor rpms only cum up slightly. I am thinking the fuel is old and needs flushed out and filter change plus thinking the solid tone is the drive needs gear oil changed out or thiers a drive issue. Any thoughts..?

You probably have a model NS90A. Check that on the plate/sticker near the transom clamps. For Nissan and Tohatsu motors, the precise model/serial is critical; year of manufacture is not. You can get an owner's manual at http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/manuals.html On page 61-62, you will see the warning indicators, which include the buzzer and indicator lamp.

There aren't any sensors to tell you about LU lube, so that's not the problem. If your motor is auto-mix, you may have a low TCW-3 oil tank level. Or it could be a clogged water intake.

Your throttle cable may not be connected, or may be incorrectly connected, causing lack of throttle, but that's just a guess.

Yes, fresh fuel is critical. Anything older than 30 days, especially if it is E-10 gas should be used in something other than your outboard.

That motor is old enough to vote. Depending on service history, you may want a dealer to give you a checkout, or if you are comfortable with the work, you can do a lot of these things yourself: Change LU lube, Check/replace impeller/WP kit, Check/adjust link and sync of throttle/carb/advance rods and stops, Check/replace spark plugs, Check/clean/replace settling bowl and fuel filter, etc. Any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer can sell you a service manual if you'd like to take on these tasks.
