Just wondering why my 71 johnson 40hp smokes pretty bad when I tank test it and none when I take it to the river? What causes this, is it normal?

That's normal. Use a fan to clear the smoke if need be.

the smoke isn't a problem where i live. just wondering why it does this.. i decarbed it and that was BAD smoke!! my closest neighbor is at least 500 feet away and they don't mind it every so often.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you can't really load it properly in the tank and get the exhaust temp up. that coupled with the more confined space makes the smoke more pronounced. Just out of curiosity are you running 50/1?

very normal in a barrel. also at idle, as most of the exhaust come out the relief ports, rather thru the prop.

Save your money on the premium gas - it doesn't need it.

yeah i kinda figured that, but i hardly use the boat. its only fun for a short time, you can't move around in it much. last time i took it out we drove around for about a hour and a half only tring to dry out. soon as i was slowing down to turn around there was a 17-19' taking off and we did fine over the first wave but the second landed in our laps. Then the gas got low and we still looked pretty silly back at the dock still real wet.
