Why does my paint wrinkle half the time?

I used zinc chromate primer on a bright aluminum cover plate and my prop. The blue paint is the same label as the primer and the white is a different label. The white looks great on the prop and the hood handle but half of the blue wrinkled as soon as it was sprayed. I thought the primer and blue would be compatible since they're the same label but half wrinkled and half looks great. I waited 24 hours after priming. What's going on?

I would try to call the manufacturers. It is not uncommon that primers or topcoats have a window of recoat. It is usually either short or very long so that the final coat does not lift and wrinkle the previous coat.

If both paints are from the same source, they should be able to give you the proper method for applying one after another.

Dupli-Color makes the MotorMaster brand. They tell me the Near Match is not compatible with the zinc chromate primer so I should prime the primer with grey primer. I'll test the MotoMaster clear coat before I strip this piece and start over.
The Dupli-Color white on the prop seems compatible but they recommend getting the matching clear coat for it. They said there are different formulations of clear coat some are "hotter" than others causing wrinkling.
I'm just glad I didn't do the entire hood.
Well, its back to the paint shop

Now that you mention it, I had a similar problem painting my aluminum valve covers. The Por15 top coat would not 'stick' to the zinc chromate primer, so I applied a two part gray primer over the zinc then applied the black Por15 over the primer.

...also when I did my outdrive, I prepped the aluminum, primed with ZC, then overprimed with the catalytic primer the sprayed on my catalyzed automotive enamel.

The paint should have a re-coat time on the back of the can.
I have had the same problem with the zinc primer. If i put it on in about 2 very thin coats it worked better.
Also stop by any auto paint store and get some tach cloth. Its cheap and is great to wipe down the surface before spraying. It removes any contaminated areas such as finger prints, oil, ect.

The second picture is solvent lift

If you really want to flip out put decals under the clear coat  that the paint did not like

Everything is working well now. Zinc chromate, grey primer, then blue top coat followed by a compatible clear coat. It's going to look better than new!!

I haven't heard on my other badge post where the 75hp badge goes. I haven't seen one in these forums and I can't see it in the brochure. Anybody????

Mine had department store stickers on the back indicating "75" just above the "Speedifour" badge. I peeled them off. I looked at the original 1964 brochure. It shows a guy fishing off the back of a boat. There's nothing but the "Speedifour" badge on the back.
