Why does my Tachometer act funny?

Sometimes it works great and others it doesn't. At idle occassionally it will read very high and then as the speed increases it will drop to normal. It really has a mind of its own sometimes. Any idea what could cause this?

My '84 Silverton does it too. In my mind t's gotta be related to poor electrical connections. I've tried cleaning the contacts at both ends but the problem persists. In my case the tachs work OK after an hour or so.
I'm probably just going to replace them with new gauges- someday! :D

That's not a bad idea. My coil doesn't have a condenser. I wonder if it should. I have a breakerless transistorized distributor.

That's probably what is causing it even tho I do not know why it does so, intermittantly. My original tach was an analogue tach. It never missed a beat. All newer tachs are digital. They seem to be the ones that do weird things.

I read coil condensers only help with radios. My tach is analog and not digital. I think the filter is the thing to do. I wonder if the speed limiter can affect the tachometer?

The tach I have is an older Quicksilver. I rotated the settings button on the back hoping it would solve the problem. It did for a while but it went back to its old antics. At 650 rpm it reads about 1000 rpm. All my wires look good.
