Well,to backbrief, I had been given an 80HP 1987 Merc,3 cyl. The gentleman brought it to a marina, was told it was junk, bought a new boat and gave me the old one that was at the marina. When I got it,there was no spark.very strange since he was runnin it.he brought it to the marina because of a warm shutdown.I fiddled and faddled with it,and fixed it,due to the support of the great minds on this site.Actually,I consider myself very "Economically Thrifty".
I found a 1984 70 HP 3 Cyl that the lower unit was blown up on. I traded my seized up 6 HP,2002 Merc for it. the switch box was the same,332-7778A1.
switched that out, still no spark.OK,you guys said stator. checked my resistance between blue and red. totally open. BAD STATOR. Pulled off stator, number 398-8778A16.Tried to find one,to no avail.pulled stator off 70 HP,number 398-5704A4. Ran numbers, everyone said wont work, wont work. had same dimensions all around.Installed stator that wouldnt work. Now I have run 27 Gals of fuel thru it,only had one little hitch.oil injection not injecting.I am getting oil to the pump, just nothing coming out.wonder if there is a bleed screw??? either way,i just mixed it 50:1 in the can. runs pissa! any ideas why it is runnin so good? battery is chargin and all.oh yeah, the stator I pulled off originally,398-8778A16,had 7 wires, 3 black ground i believe. 2 of the black wires were freshly cut flush with the ring. what were these for, and would the marina have cut them????

The 2 black wires were grounds, and it would not run without them. Some don't have them and ground through the frame screws. If they are there, they need to be connected to an engine ground. If the end of the wire is shiney where it was cut, you're looking at sabotage.

The way to find out if a stator will fit is to back trace it by finding out which aftermarket stator replaces each. If it's the same, likely they are interchangeable.

hope it helps

Exactly what I thought....SABOTAGE!.... I replaced the 8778 Stator, with the 5704 stator. the 8778 stator was the one at the marina...with the wires cut!guess it made him buy a new boat!!!!! anyway, thank you for reassuring me on what marina NOT TO GO TO!!!! Any idea if the oil pump has a bleed screw? or is the pump junk??? it is not a problem to mix the gas, just figure if it is oil injected, why not use it??? and yes,the 5704 stator is running great.everything merc says is no way it will work!!!! I will remember that when i am hooked into a nice landlocked!!!

The oil pump has a bleed screw.

I'd get a mercury manual for that motor. You can pull the oil pump and check it out. You can also check for a rotation signal to the oil alarm with normal tools. Chances are it bound up and sheared the plastic gear on the crankshaft. If you have to tear it down for something else, it's no big deal, but you have tear the motor down to replace the oil pump drive gear.

If it's sheared, they make an oil pump block off adapter that will keep the bushing from falling into the motor. (with morbid results) Then pull off the oil tanks, and the oil alarm module and premix 50:1

If the oil alarm doesn't go beeeeep, beep, beep, beep when you turn the ignition on, that's been cut off also. If the oil pump isn't turning, the oil alarm should sound as soon as you start the engine, or earlier if it starts hard.

Hope it helps

I am gettin no beep or anything when i go to start. If I just leave it "as is" with no oil coming in from tank and mix my fuel/oil.will the bushing still drop?
The thing is runnin like a top now. so far I have put 24 Gals of fuel/50:1 into it,with no problems. So,if the gear is sheared,And I leave it alone, will anything drop into engine?

I don't know. Maybe the plastic gear is already shredded and consumed by fire.

If it were mine, I'd get the block off part and do it right.

You need part number 43453 if it is available. That retains the pump driveshaft bushing and plugs the hole where the pump mounts. Then remove the oil components and the warning module. You'll also need to remove the fitting that the oil tank pressure hose attaches to and plug the hole in the block.

Order three stickers (37-818029 1), one to mount near the fuel fitting on the motor, one for the dash, and one near the fuel fill fitting on the boat. They'll alert the operator that the gas needs to have oil added. One frequent problem we see here regards the infamous "brother-in-law" that forgets to add oil to the gas and roaches the motor.

You should probably replace the fuel lines where the fitting for the oil T's into the fuel line with a single piece of fuel line.

Thank you very much for your help... This thing runs like new....cant believe a marina would do that to sell a boat! Wouldnt have happened to me,thats for sure!.I will look for that block off plate, thank you for researching the #'s.

Part # is for a V6. Probably the same for yours. Check it out for sure.

Sadly, I wouldn't rule sabotage out anymore. I've seen WAY too many Brunswick Mercury dealers refuse to work on the 70's and 80's inlines because "they are junk" etc etc. The truth is that they don't know how to fix them properly, or they just wanna sell new outboards. Iether way.... it suckes to have to take an old Merc to a dealer. Find an independant shop with a Mechanic over 40 years old.

As mix your gas... if oil injection fails - it dies.

Ya know, He did walk out with a new 6,000.00 boat. I know it was sabotage!
just sucks no matter what... That is why I always fix my own stuff. Its to a point where you cannot trust anyone without looking over thier shoulder...which I do all the time. What does my wife call me? oh yeah, ECONONOMICALLY FRUGAL....About the only time I pay someone to fix something for me is the oil burner guy,and even then, thats only if I am off on another Army trip. Thank god for the internet and the public library!
By the way, BOAT RUNS PISSER! This thing, knock on wood,is runnin so good, the wife can start it and run it.It takes about 2.5 seconds to fire off....
Ya know,I would like nothing more than to go up and throw the stator they cut at the marina thru the front window....BUT that would be illegal???? rippin off people aint though!
