ihave a 6 hp johnson from 1965 , i think it's not going as (fast) as it should go .
for example , 5 kids in a boat about my boat's size with a 4.5 hp tomos can go just as (fast) as me , while i'm alone in my boat .
i just don't get it , i have replaced the impeller , i put an evinrude powerhead from 68 on it (i do not know the horsepowers , but everything looked the same and the carb was identical ) , i replaced one of the coils .

what's my problem ( besides my wife ).

Re: why is it ?????

There isn't really a big difference in horsepower but a large difference in weight distribution. Try comparing with identical weight loads, assuming boats are same size and design. Motor installation could be different, prop could be different, boat may be planing different. Went thru the same problem with my puddle jumper. It actually went about twice as fast with more weight in it. Could not get the boat to plane and with the bow in the air, it was acting like a brake. Try sitting more to the middle or add some weight to the bow. Not sure if your bow is hanging as you don't say but worth looking into.
Mike

Re: why is it ?????

thanks for your help but ,i,m already sitting in the middle of the boat , controlling the outboard with a pvc pipe ,so i think the weight distribution is optimal .
my gues is that there is something wrong whit the engine but what .

Re: why is it ?????

You are probably running on one cylinder, Gerke.

With engine idling on the muffs or in water, pull or short out one plug wire, then the other.

If there is no change, that is a dead cylinder. If the engine dies or slows that is a good cylinder.

If you have a dead cylinder, check for spark. If no spark, pull the flywheel and inspect points and condenser. You will find a bad coil, a bad condenser or misadjusted points.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

:)

Hi, Gerke.

You are probably getting spark to both cylinders, but it is not certain. Even with spark, it is not certain that both cylinders are making power.

Check it. :)

Are you sure your boat is supposed to plane?
My '65 6 hp Johnson on my banana shaped rowboat will go 6-7 mph. Same engine on my other boat will go twice as fast. (And that's fast huh?)

/Bear

I think your boat has reached hull speed, with or without kids. You'ld probably have to over power boat to go much faster, enjoy the ride; you could be rowing!

Re: why is it ?????

I had a 14' aluminum flat bottom with 6hp Evinrude and never went on plane. I had to "upgrade" to 15hp to get more speed, now I have a 30hp and I beat bassboats on take off...

Val

Re: why is it ?????

i checked the dead cylinder thing but both cylinders are ok .
i replaced a little tube on the side of the powerhead , i think its a gasoline tube , but i can hardly see any gasoline going through it .
i went out boating yesterday and i think it's going (faster) now .
