why is water comeing out around the bottom of my shift shaft on my lower unit

hi again guys. I have a motor that when not in the water all the way but just enough to pump water . I notice that there is water comeing out around my shift shaft where it goes into the lower unit ... now another problem I have exaust comeing out around one of the bolts that bolt the lower unit on it also leaks water out that bolt then when you shut it off and then pull it out the water. this motor is a 25 horse merc. about a 96 model .. wats my problem ? thanks in advance ..

I saw this when I failed to line up the pump output with the tube going to the motor. At the time I did notice there wasn't any water comming out of the telltail. I had to drop the LU and try again. If I were you and didn't know the history of that motor I would get a powerful drill and run the LU in a bucket to see if it was put together right. There are alot of shadetree mechanics out there. Well ther is water comeing out the pee hole but I figured there was something not correct there esspesally the exaust comeing out there as well does this mean mabe the exaust pipe is wrong to you are a big help to me im having power trim issues as well thanks and please keep intouch

I have the same problem with a 1988 80 hp merc. No exhaust coming out on mine though so am very interested in any answers you get.
